We have extra krauts from our first batch! Therefore we have some to share with our community!

Homemade Artisanal Sauerkraut - $15 per 430g jar

Home grown, sprayfree cabbage. Hand cut and slow fermented for one year in a watersealed fermentation crock.

“Traditional artisanal sauerkraut is unlike the sauerkraut from large commercial producers in that the former has no added vinegar or cultures and the cabbage is not pasteurized during the lacto-fermentation process.”

Pick up in Petite Riviere, NS or Downtown Dartmouth

Last weekend was the beginning of the house reno! We are putting in a wood cook stove right in place of the green bucket and stool. So this week has been busy with Angus tearing out walls, and an electrician and plumber in to help remove the old wiring and bathroom. Big things are happening!

The kitchen has been a point of tension this past year with the open Fridge door blocking the only access, along with many other issues, mainly being that the kitchen is way too small. Our new kitchen design is going to make for the biggest kitchen we’ve ever had, taking up close to half the downstairs. When you spend so much time growing your own food, you need to have a large and comfortable place to do all the cooking and preserving!

Cabin update! We are at the peak of researching and preparing to make the cabin livable come the winter! This mean lots of time learning and watching YouTube videos, as well as buying all that we need, from window install materials, vapour barrier, insulation, and siding, just to name a few. Before we really get the ball rolling, now is the time to paint everything that needs stained or painted before the weather changes! We painted the door and are sanding and staining the clapboard siding (can you guess what colour!?). We also got started on putting in the loft and some collar ties to support the structure of the cabin.

The first Rosehip harvest of the season!

I am lucky to have a dog when I go for walks, because I always have a bag on hand when I stumble across some berries, or in this case rosehips!. This time I saw some beautiful rose hips, all ripe and ready for picking. The best type of foraging, unplanned, just happen upon a wonderful pick.

Rose hips are a bit of a pain to forage and deal with at home. You have to work amongst the thorns to pick them, and then you have to remove all the seeds; the seeds cannot be eaten. They are then dried and blended into a powder to add in breakfasts.
The hassle is worth it as they are very high in vitamin C and minerals.

We’re getting all the outdoor projects done before starting on the home reno’s. We’ve got a staircase to build inside so Angus is warming up his stair case building skills with some step additions to the side deck!

Yesterday we harvested our purple potatoes! This is a heritage variety potato that is generally more nutritious than your typical white or red potato. The inside is a beautiful purple and they are rare to find at stores and even farmers market, as they tend to be less productive.

We were pleasantly surprised to have such a productive crop! We were also surprised to see that the potato plants died off much sooner that we expected and we had to do an emergency harvest as some of the potatoes were starting to rot. We are thinking our heavy watering contributed to consistently moist soil, leaving the potatoes at risk of rot as soon as the plants were done producing. Fortunately very few were lost in comparison to what we harvested!

Next year we plan to plant a bit later in hopes to harvest later, as the garden is benefiting from all the watering!

Angus planted white potatoes in the old manure pile a few weeks after these were planted, so we anticipate we will have a good potato haul this year!!

Cabin update! The cabin has been taking a little rest, fully wrapped up in tarps, while Claire has been all consumed in photographing and filming the peak of Wedding Season. We will be sheathing and shingling the roof this weekend, again with the incredible help of our carpentry friend Jake!

Before we wrapped the cabin mid July, Claire and Floris protected the exposed interior poplar sheathing with a clear wax by . The poplar has such a light mild colour to it, and beautiful grain detail which will be nice to showcase on the walls. There is the option to paint the walls in the future, but we want to see how the natural look feels once the interior is furnished!

Stay tuned for some roofing updates!

This is my new outdoor work counter, Angus made it yesterday under the eaves of the barn. Today was the beginning of the sauerkraut making season.

My cabbages are beautiful! Between two cabbages I chopped 10 1/2 pounds of kraut! We will have way too much sauerkraut for ourselves this year, so we are playing with the idea of preparing some to sell! We are also starting to gauge interest in sauerkraut making workshops for the fall!

Lindsay was around this week to help photograph the process!

This has been our most productive year for vegetables! Our new location is so optimal for production, with endless watering coming right out the river. While we are close to the coast, we are inland enough that we don’t get the coastal fog. The temperature can drop about 10 degrees as we drive 8 minutes to the beaches! We also found our city property much cooler with the sea breeze.

While the vegetables are abundant we are having to purchase our berries and fruit this year while we wait for the bushes and trees to mature!
