This one is special. Sitting on a knoll from which a founding family’s Cape surveyed Mahone Bay for 200 years before meeting the wrecking ball in the 90s, this modern shell is going to envelop the timber-frame from a 19th c barn that was also on the property. Guided by .hewn and ably assisted by , this project therefore runs the gamut from ultra-modern to highly traditional. It’s a pleasure to be working with and .lukac too!

First look at one of our 2022 projects and and the gang are doing a bang-up job yet again. This boathouse/cottage is a nice return to a traditional style for us; stay tuned for the folding carriage doors we’ll build to fill that gaping opening…

Finally nearing the finish line at our Mason’s Beach build. The outdoor kitchen has yet to be built but the client is moving in tomorrow all the same. This project has been extremely ably run by and a huge thank you is due both to him and all the crew and subs who came together to make this happen

Things are starting to come together at our Mason’s Beach build! The combination of this pre-stained cedar siding and the “deep purple” trim work should look good with the grey cultured stone going on the chimney and exposed basement wall. Big thanks to for stepping up big-time on this one...

One of the most gratifying kind of projects we regularly take on is sash and storm window restoration. This classic Chester cottage is having its original century-old sash completely refurbished right down to the weights and pulleys - as it should be done! We’ll tackle this work through the winter and then undertake further exterior renewal in the spring so that by summertime this cottage is ready to be well-loved for another year.

The restoration of this circa-1850 barn in Blockhouse, NS is one of our more exciting current projects as it is to become our new headquarters! We’re stripping it back to its timber-frame in order to be able to return the frame to square and plumb, at which point we’ll reinstall all the hemlock board sheathing we just removed. Then we’ll build a conventional 2x exoskeleton around the whole thing in order to hide insulation and services while ensuring the timber-frame remains fully visible to the inside...

Wall sheathing is just about finished at our Fancy Lake build. You’ll notice we cut all our rafters flush with the outside face of the exterior walls (garage trusses excepted); this is so we can build out our soffits on top of the Zip R insulated sheathing and thus maintain a thermal break in the wall all the way up to the roof sheathing. We’re able to get away with this because our soffits’ overhang is quite minimal but this system mightn’t work with a deeper overhang requiring the cantilever strength of integrated rafter tails...

Operating clerestory windows can be a bit of an issue, but not so when you have to design the system pictured above! You can see the sash on the right in the middle image and on the left the Velux skylight opener we’ll reach via a long pole with a hooked end. The central block even pivots to allow for the changing angle at the sash as it’s cranked open! Nice little piece of in-house engineering if we do say so ourselves!

Lots going on at our Halifax Craftsman restoration! The 1960s Liberace-style fireplace surround and mirroring are gone and the fireplace awaits its new stone facing. The Marvin windows and doors are creating an amazingly sun-filled living-dining area with its new walk-out onto a revamped back deck. The walls and ceilings’ plaster repair work is coming along, and the cabinet doors from the classic Craftsman style cabinet-and-column partition have been taken away for refurbishment. Can’t wait to see it all start coming together in the weeks ahead!
