Our living room is finally almost done and I think Jason did an incredible job! This is the part of the house we sealed off from the main house for a couple of years. When we first started there were squirrels that made this part home 😬. It needed a new foundation, new roof, new floor joists, new walls, and you name it. It was a big project and Jason tackled it with pure determination to make my design a reality. I wanted a high ceiling that followed the roofline. He wasn’t sure how he was going to do it but I had faith in his renovation and construction skills. There was talk about making a flat ceiling but I saw something with character that could be in pine and Jason delivered what i envisioned just like I knew he could.
Thanks to Uncle Mark for creating a few custom wood trim pieces for the ceiling.
The floor hatch isn’t totally complete but I think we can say the room is a success even with some finishing touches left to complete.
Every time I walk into this room it makes me smile! 😊 ❤️
Photos from now to the beginning.

Thank you to James Saynor
volunteer at LTI Archives for sharing these photos of our place with us. I didn’t realize this was called Sheffield’s Point. In this photo you can see when, what used to be the summer kitchen, was on the other side. Very cool!

Ok, I went with what I had and went with stripes. I put some coats of varathane on the wood and used a throw blanket I had and some left over foam from when we had new boat seats made. Our porch roof is so large that the couch doesn’t actually see much weather and if the couch needs recovering in the future I can change things up then. I made the pillow cover open so I can pull it off and wash it and I also gave it some extra material to hang down a bit because there was a rough edge.
When I coated the wood on the couch I also decided to give a sign my brother in law, Ken Hammond gave us years ago a refresh and hope to place it out front.
While I was working on the couch, Jason worked on putting in the ceiling on the porch (see last pics). I was available when he needed extra hands for some of the longer pieces. We will be doing some white wash on the ceiling because the pine wasn’t top grade. So many projects always on the go. Hence the bathroom vanity currently sitting on the porch (and the toilet sitting in our hallway) while the downstairs bathroom is getting a new floor and paint job.

Trying out colours for the couch with things I have on hand. Do I go solid with teal and make it pop or do I go with some navy stripes? I loved the idea of blue with daisies but I think I have to keep in mind all seasons and can get a nice Daisy pillow to dress it up.

I am looking for some design/fabric ideas for a project. Last fall, I saw this awesome free couch on the side of the road, and I wanted it. The thing was, I didn't have a vehicle to get it when I stopped, but the homeowners were kind enough to deliver it to my house for me. I asked them if they could set it on the porch because I wasn't going to be there. My husband happened to be there when they got there to deliver it, and he actually told them they must have the wrong house, that is, until they said "But your wife ....." and enough said. Jason just simply sent me a text that day that said, "Really!" Well, he made it clear we didn't have room inside for the diamond in the rough, and so I decided it would become our porch couch. Now it is time to show this porch couch some love and find a fabric that suits the house. This is where I need your ideas! I'm having trouble deciding on the best colours and whether to opt for big or small print. I have stripped it down (because it was kind of smelly, to be honest), and now that the straw and burlap are out, it smells much better. I have also removed the old springs, and Jason has put a piece of plywood down, so it's ready for me to make some pillows. Let's hear your ideas, and bonus points if you have pictures of fabric suggestions, lol!

Thinking of our friends Irene and Dan who moved out west last year. They kindly gifted us cabinets that Dan made. We had them stored in a trailer until recently when i decided it was time to bring them in. We had planned on putting them in the living room but realized we had too many windows in the walls for them to fit. So we put them in Jason’s office. Dan had designed them for a corner (see first pic), but they wouldn’t fit that way for us again because of windows. I suggested that Jason cut down one of the cabinets so they could fit side by side on a wall. Jason resisted the idea for a while but decided he would give it a go after some encouragement. I think he did a great job in preserving the lovely cabinets that Dan made and Irene decorated (see last pic for close up). We still have some touching up to do but I’m so glad “we” made it work.

This summer we cleared a spot on our property that was full of sumac because I say if you have waterfront you want to see it! I forgot to take a before picture but remembered when we were about halfway through cutting down the brush. We had two old chairs that were left here that I thought would be perfect to sit on the rock to relax from and enjoy the view. John Tye says he thinks the chairs are from the 1940’s and made by Glen McElroy’s father.
