A few of my plants are looking pretty rough right now; Antennaria, Sweet Everlasting, and this Pearly Everlasting are covered in webs and swarmed with worms ๐Ÿ’š

Why am I not worried? Because these are caterpillars of American and Painted Lady butterflies! Yes these little caterpillars will eat the majority of the plant, but Pearly Everlasting is extremely resilient. Theyโ€™ve evolved with these caterpillars over millennia and quickly bounce back once they finish feeding. These plants will be just fine.

Iโ€™m having a sale this weekend on 2nd year oak trees! They are $10 each, (+HST).

Choose from four species - Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa), Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra), White Oak (Quercus alba) and Black Oak (Quercus velutina) (limited numbers).

All were grown in air pruning beds to ensure a healthy root system. Acorns were collected within 100km of Haliburton.

Now is the best time to plant an oak tree! They are beautiful keystone species that support hundreds of species of wildlife. Young oaks also establish and grow faster than larger oaks, so you wonโ€™t have to wait a century to get a large tree.

Also new this week are 2nd year Jack-in-the-pulpit! These were grown from seed sown in 2024 and collected locally. They should bloom next spring.

Come on out to 1274 Lochlin Rd., Minden this Fri-Mon from 10-4pm! We have tons of species to choose from.

Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) is blooming now at the nursery! It is a native bee magnet and a wonderful choice for a pollinator garden.

This is a more southern species, found in neighboring Peterborough County and south throughout the province in open woodlands.

It is a perfect replacement for non-native geraniums. It works really well in traditional part shade gardens alongside hostas and lilies.

Pair them with native Hairy Beardtongue, Wild Red Columbine, and Yellow Pimpernel for a glorious late spring garden. Wild Geranium turns a bright red in fall, so include Sky Blue and Arrow-leaf Aster for dramatic contrasting fall colour.

And donโ€™t forget sedges! Long-beaked, Eastern Star, and Graceful Sedge are great companions and fill in around plants to create a beautiful green mulch.

I still have plenty of Wild Geranium left, $7.50 each or 3/$20 +HST. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ

We are fully โ€˜fernishedโ€™ again! Ferns are back in stock. Choose from six different species suited to woodland and wetland environments in full-part shade!

Northern Maidenhair Fern - moist-dry deciduous woodland
Ostrich/ Fiddlehead Fern - moist-dry part-shade
Marginal Wood Fern - moist-dry woodland, part-full shade
Lady Fern - not picky at all about growing conditions, prefers part shade
Cinnamon Fern - can grow in full sun in wetland conditions, part shade in drier soil
Royal Fern - a spectacular large fern when mature. Great for adding depth and drama in a moist, part-shade spot.

I left the moth light on last night and woke up to a pretty spectacular sheet! Loads of giant silk moths, prominents, Zales, sphinxes, geometers, and other cool species.

Periodically doing this helps inform me about the health of our ecosystem. You can infer this by the number of moths you get, both species and individuals, and by the host plants these moths use.

For example, we always get a lot of Luna Moths, which host on White Birch, of which we have a lot of. If we had the birch but no Lunas, something would be wrong.

If you choose to setup a sheet like this, please record your observations on iNaturalist so they become part of the public record: https://www.inaturalist.ca

Weโ€™re open to the public today (Friday) and Sat, Sun, and Mon from 10-4pm. The sheet is still up, so come out and learn about moths while checking out our native plants ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ˜„

Luna Moth season has officially begun in the highlands. These beautiful moths are fairly common, especially if you have a lot of birch trees around (their preferred caterpillar host plant in the area).

These moths have a short life span of about a week, during which they donโ€™t feed and only live to reproduce. We set up a light to monitor for populations once or twice a week, but leave it off most nights to allow the moths to make the most of their short lives. Three were on the sheet this morning, which is about average.
