Choosing a landscape contractor

Experts agree that landscaping will add value to your home and will provide you with more outdoor quality time if the space if designed well, however choosing a landscape contractor can be a daunting task.

Here are my top 10 questions which will help you choose the right landscape contractor for you.

1. Ask for a Certificate of Clearance- this shows that your contractor is paying WSIB insurance on behalf of his employees. It is the law, all respectable landscape contractors should show you proof of this, otherwise you will be liable if an accident was to happen.
2. Ask for a proof of Liability Insurance
3. Make sure to sign a contract- this will protect you and the landscape contractor as well as outline costs and scope of the work.
4. Warranty- A good landscape contractor will offer a guarantee on his/her work.
5. Ask for past clients references
6. How many years have they been in business? Check previous work preferably done over 5 years ago to see if it withstood the test of time – Landscaping is a great investment and you do not want to have to redo this every 2 years!
7. What are the landscape contractor’s qualifications, education and certifications?
8. Do they own their own equipment?
9. Do they belong to an Association membership such as Landscape Ontario?
10. Have an overall look at their company profile and professionalism; are the trucks, skidsteers, excavator clean? Do they clean up at the end of each day? Are the employees wearing logo shirts? Does are small details but make a difference.

Bear in mind that the cheapest quote may not always be the best. If the ground work is not done properly, it will cost you more down the road.

Hopefully by asking these few questions you will feel more confident about selecting the right landscape contractor.

Always nice to receive emails such as this. Landscapes should withstand the test of time... so many times I get called to redo work from other contractors done only 2-3 years previous. The foundation is as important, if not more than the pretty accents and flowers.
“Thirteen years ago we had Jeff and his staff install the landscaping around our home on Nottawasaga Bay. It was a job well done. The most important thing was that Jeff got the sense of our property and needs and it was reflected in the completed stone work and landscaping. This spring we had him come back to do
an update and in his usual professional, efficient manner his friendly staff once again completed the project with excellent results. We would recommend this company highly.”
