Love this poem and art by my friend Ruth Calder-Murphy. We celebrate and live 42 together.
Raising the Bar
- By Ruth Calder Murphy -
Growing older -
And I’m raising the Bar
Every year,
Looking Fear in the face,
Kissing its would-be ugly
And dancing it in a close embrace
Over the horizon
To another new place.
Destinations blossom in technicolour
Just around the bend
And over the hill.
I mark them on my round-the-bend,
Over-the-hill
Map of Me,
My eccentricity emerging for all to see,
Never mind how unseemly it might be.
Here I go again,
Into another older age,
Running with the wolves of Fear and Hope
And aiming higher than I have before.
I’m raising the Bar
And setting myself towards new mountain peaks,
Aligning myself with all the beautiful freaks
Who seize the day
And take Time with a pinch of sea-surf-salt,
All tangy on the tongue -
And head off to the land that Time forgot.
I’m growing older
and raising the bar
to the moonbeam-magicked sky
Because why
In all the spiraling galaxies
Should I not?
