My Wild Front Yard Welcome to My Wild Front Yard.

In 2019 we decided we had had enough of battling the dandelions and creeping buttercup in our lawn and felt the space would be better served growing food and flowers for ourselves and our community.

An interesting article I just read on loathsome knotweed. I like the line "if you can't beat it, eat it"!

The peas and broad beans went in yesterday. With the added bonus that I had a little helper. I'm experimenting with presoaking some seeds and not soaking some instead of succession planting, as I have no time for extras this year.

Step 3 in planning my 2023 garden

When to plant!

Have you seeded anything yet?!

So I've decided what to plant now I need to organize the timing of it all. This changes from year to year for me depending on the successes and failure of the previous year. I have a few things I reference. In order 9f importance:

1 My own notes from previous years, on phenological indicators, on discussions with other gardeners in the area.
2 the farmers almanac schedule (is often a bit early for some things for me)
3 West Coast Seeds planting guide (is often a couple weeks late for me)
4) Charles Dowdings planting schedule. (Is a bit later in his climate, especially in late spring, but I like his succession planting tips)

I take all these and make notes on when to plant each thing, then create a calendar of when to sow them based on rough month and phenological indicators to watch for. My daughter helped me with this one ;).

This year I'm trying to sow as much as I can direct S I found the last 2 years trying to juggle 3 kids, a full time job, and a big garden too stressful for my seedlings always waiting to be transplanted. So there are going to be a few experiments this year with brassicas and beans. I found the lettuce I sowed last year did way better sowed directly so I'm not going to bother fiddling with it this year.

I've started some lettuce and micro tomatoes in my click and grow. I find this system keeps everything way too wet. Anyone have a different one that's better?

Happy New Year!

Step 2 of 2023 garden planning. The when and how.

Is there anything you start in January?

For me its hot peppers, some brassicas, and some flowers.

What and when is the first thing you direct sow?

I seed my first peas, radishes and lettuces in mid February once I've got some of my compost spread.

As for the planning process; after listing all the stuff I wanted to grow this year, and checking to see if I have the seeds, I check my notes from precious years to see when the best time and what the best method to plant them is.

I then gather all the seeds and put them in these photo boxes. Start indoors on the left, and direct sow boxes on the right.

This month I'm doing an experiment and I'm tossing some peas, radish, and lettuce seeds that I have lots of in a few different spots in the garden to see when they begin to sprout. I have a calendar of phenological indicators in my binder, but it's nice to get hints from the same type of thing I want to grow and to check my garden for micro climates.

I'll do a post later on phenological indicators as I use nature's cues to tell me when to plant instead of calender dates. It will be a much more trustworthy method in the coming years as the climate changes.
