Cet ancien duplex rosemontois avait fait l’objet de plusieurs réaménagements. Afin de répondre aux nouveaux besoins des occupants et de s’arrimer aux interventions précédentes, le programme est rationalisé et le potentiel existant du bâtiment est exploité : plutôt qu’agrandir vers la cour arrière, le rez-de-chaussée est réorganisé, un sous-sol est creusé, une cour anglaise est aménagée. Le sous-sol accueille des espaces aux usages variés. L’aménagement se caractérise par une continuité matérielle forte, alliant érable et béton. Une paroi continue en lamelles de bois intègre de manière fluide les accès aux espaces de service, des rangements et une bibliothèque. Le projet allie luminosité et intimité grâce à une conception soignée des ouvertures, conciliant l’apport de lumière naturelle et le caractère enveloppant des espaces de vie. La cour anglaise agit comme puits de lumière, offrant une notion du passage des heures et des saisons. L’ombre et la lumière sont mises en scène, l’architecture leur servant de toile de fond.

This former Rosemont duplex had undergone several renovations. In order to meet the new needs of the occupants and to tie in with previous interventions, the program was streamlined and the existing potential of the building was exploited: rather than extending toward the backyard, the main floor is reorganized, a basement is dug out, and a courtyard is created. The basement houses spaces for a variety of uses. The design is characterized by a strong material continuity, combining maple and concrete. A continuous wall of wood battens seamlessly integrates access to service areas, storage spaces and a bookshelf.
The project offers both brightness and privacy thanks to a careful design of the openings, reconciling the contribution of natural light and the enveloping character of the living spaces. The courtyard acts as a skylight, offering a sense of the passing hours and the seasons. Light and shadow are staged, with the architecture serving as their backdrop.

Résidence Birch

​​La résidence Birch offrait une architecture et une matérialité généreuses, évoquant l’élégance domestique du siècle dernier. Cependant, la conception d’origine, avec ses pièces cloisonnées, était à certains égards incompatible avec une vie familiale contemporaine. L’objectif était de créer des espaces fluides et ouverts sur la cour. Le nouvel aménagement intérieur s’articule ainsi autour de deux axes principaux : les services et la circulation, d’une part, et les espaces de vie, d’autre part. La cuisine est désormais le point focal, favorisant un flux naturel avec le rez-de-chaussée et l’extérieur. La palette de matériaux sobre joue sur les contrastes inhérents entre la chaleur du bois et la froideur du béton. Prisme de maçonnerie, écho de la matérialité d’origine, le nouveau volume établit un contraste formel avec le bâtiment existant. Étranger et familier, l’agrandissement tranche sans heurter.

The Birch residence offered a generous architecture and materiality, evoking the domestic elegance of the last century. However, the original design, with its partitioned rooms, sometimes conflicted with a contemporary family lifestyle. The aim was to create fluid spaces, in connection with the backyard. The new interior layout is organized in two main axes: services and circulation, and living spaces. The kitchen is now the focal point, promoting a natural flow with the ground floor and the exterior. The subtle material palette plays on the inherent contrasts between the warmth of wood and the coldness of concrete. A prism of masonry, echoing the original materiality, the new volume establishes a formal contrast with the existing building. At once alien and familiar, the extension stands out without confronting.

« L’arrière de la résidence Laval se trouve baigné de lumière naturelle et animé des ombres du feuillage des arbres avoisinants. L’accent demeure sur les éléments historiques restaurés du bâtiment, l’intervention étant pratiquement purement spatiale – un volume de lumière unissant les étages. »

"The back of the house is flooded with natural light and enlivened by the shadows of foliage from nearby trees. The focus remains on the restored historical elements of the house, the intervention being almost purely spatial – a volume of light-filled space connecting floors."

« La résidence Laval comportait plusieurs agrandissements successifs à l’arrière, adjacents à une cour difficilement accessible. L’assemblage de façade est retiré, établissant de nouvelles connexions avec le contexte et facilitant l’accès à la cour, réaménagée afin d’offrir un espace intimiste au cœur de la ville. »

“The Laval residence had layers of additions on the rear, adjacent to a hardly accessible backyard. The rear collection of facades is removed, creating new connections with the surroundings and easing access to the backyard, redesigned to offer an intimate space in the heart of the city.”

« Sur Le Plateau–Mont-Royal, une maison de ville en pierre grise se fond avec ses voisines, toutes construites côte à côte au 19e siècle. Il s’agit d’un paysage urbain commun dans ce secteur, la réglementation patrimoniale assurant la protection des façades visibles. Cette réglementation préservant la cohérence du paysage urbain ne s’applique cependant pas aux intérieurs ou aux façades arrière de ces bâtiments, offrant une plus grande flexibilité architecturale et un certain éclectisme. »

“In the Plateau–Mont-Royal district, a greystone townhouse fits in with its neighbors, each one built in the 19th century, standing shoulder to shoulder. This is a common streetscape for this neighborhood, as heritage regulations protect facades that are in public views. The bylaws that keep the urban landscape coherent however do not apply to the interiors or the rear facades of these buildings, offering a greater architectural flexibility and some eclectism.”

Table Architecture’s Duplex Clark combines heritage restoration with modern design, using natural materials like stone and wood.
