A sonic ritual with the forest.
Forest Mixer is a voice composting system that turns spoken messages into harmonies that resonate through its environment, gradually decomposing into vibrations felt in both body and soil. Nestled in a forest of British Columbia, the artwork invites reflection on the cycles of growth and decay that sustain all living systems.
Visitors speak into an input station, sending their voice through the tubular structure where it rises into harmonic melodies and descends into disintegration and decomposition. Interaction points along the way allow visitors to reach out and loop a message, further mixing the soundscape. At the end, messages descend into a vibration platform, where visitors can feel the music disintegrate into the soil. From the site, the calls of tree frogs and sea lions blend with the forest’s own acoustic presence, creating a rich sonic habitat for the artwork.
