A sonic ritual with the forest.

Forest Mixer is a voice composting system that turns spoken messages into harmonies that resonate through its environment, gradually decomposing into vibrations felt in both body and soil. Nestled in a forest of British Columbia, the artwork invites reflection on the cycles of growth and decay that sustain all living systems.

Visitors speak into an input station, sending their voice through the tubular structure where it rises into harmonic melodies and descends into disintegration and decomposition. Interaction points along the way allow visitors to reach out and loop a message, further mixing the soundscape. At the end, messages descend into a vibration platform, where visitors can feel the music disintegrate into the soil. From the site, the calls of tree frogs and sea lions blend with the forest’s own acoustic presence, creating a rich sonic habitat for the artwork.

We’re honoured to have been part of the 4th Porto Design Biennale, Time is Present: Designing the Common, an edition that explored the question of time, leisure, and spatial justice in the city.

Our book Strangers Need Strange Moments Together was on exhibition at Casa Do Design, and we also contributed a design protocol to this beautiful catalogue, sharing our thinking around public space, play, and small but powerful gestures that can turn passerby into participants.

Thank you for the invitation to be part of such a thoughtful gathering of practices.

How do you build a city that makes people feel like they belong?

🎙️In this episode of Strangers Need Strange Moments Together, Mouna and Melissa sit down with Ilana Altman, CEO of The Bentway 📍Toronto, an ambitious public space and civic organization transforming the land beneath Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway.

From a life-size domino trail snaking two and a half kilometres across the city, to a post-pandemic season at The Bentway that reimagined play for adults, this episode is about what happens when the potential of existing city infrastructure is harnessed to build community in unexpected ways, and turn people into active participants in their public spaces.

Daily tous les jours collaborated with Juno award winning composer on the development of an interactive soundtrack for Human Perches, an immersive forest path at a birds of prey sanctuary that invites new interspecies connections through active listening.

Keiko created an evolving dialogue between two sonic layers: a base composition, and trigger tracks featuring the voices of seasonal birds. The perches adopt the energy of their respective seasons, featuring bright pizzicatos for spring, languid pedal steel for summer, low strings for autumn, and airy flutes for winter.

The resulting soundscape offers rich details to those who perch and lean in to listen, sharpening the senses. Once the experience is complete and the perches fall silent, visitors have remarked on being able to hear new sounds from the forest.

Human Perches, an immersive forest path at a sanctuary for birds of prey, carefully uses interactive technology, ambient soundscapes, and structural typology normally used by birds in order to reconnect humans to avian species and sharpen the senses.

Aluminum tubes of varying lengths are assembled to allow for human perching at different heights. Anodized color elements highlight the interactive perching components, and differentiate the artwork’s four seasonal soundtracks.

Perching components at the top of the poles invite avian friends to join the experience, a more likely occurrence when no humans are present.

Created in collaboration with the wonderful composer .
