Grandparent Scam Update

On March 26, 2025, Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) received approximately 30 calls for service from Moose Jaw residents indicating they were contacted as part of an attempted "grandparent scam". Several residents had provided cash to a female suspect, who was posing as a bail bondsperson, collecting money.

MJPS Criminal Investigation Section (CIS) began an operation, which resulted in the arrest of 44 year old Veronique CHARPENTIER of Montreal, Quebec. CHARPENTIER is facing multiple charges of Fraud over $5000 from Moose Jaw Police Service as well as other agencies. CHARPENTIER is the second individual MJPS has arrested and charged for involvement in grandparent scams since 2024.

With the assistance of Regina Police Service, MJPS executed a search warrant on April 3, 2025, seizing proceeds of crime relating to these allegations.

CHARPENTIER appeared in Provincial Court on April 4, 2025 and has been remanded in custody.
Attached is a photo of CHARPENTIER taken during one of these allegations in the event there were other frauds committed that have not yet been reported to police.

Moose Jaw Police Service reminds the public that police, judges, lawyers or jails will never contact citizens looking for money to bail their loved ones out of jail. MJPS would like to encourage anyone who believes they were the victim of this scam to contact their local police service, or MJPS at 306-694-7600.
