When installing tile, movement joints are critical to a long lasting installation. The most common movement joint is a perimeter joint. As the name implies, a perimeter joint is formed around the perimeter of the installation where a tiled surface meets another surface, being another tile, drywall, or any other building material. Perimeter joints must be filled with a flexible sealant and never filled with mortar or grout. While crucial in any application, perimeter joints are most often overlooked when installing floor tile. This gap is hidden by baseboard, and it’s usually assumed that it doesn’t really matter.
