OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
The Haul Truck Operator is primarily responsible for safe and efficient operation of the haul truck; a large truck used to haul heavy loads that has a steel box or dump body attached to the rear frame in a way so that one end of the box can be raised allowing the contents to fall out. It is also the responsibility of the haul truck operator to load and transport various types of equipment using various types of tilt deck and low deck trailers. Work is performed under the direction of various Crew Foremen or other appropriate management depending on the type of work, location of work and materials being hauled. This position involves various manual and operational tasks and requires an acute knowledge of the functions of the haul truck and related equipment.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Haul Truck Operation
-Perform a daily start-up routine
-Perform a daily inspection of all major components of the haul truck, trailer and related equipment for defects, wear and proper alignment and record the results in the company provided inspection log. Inform Foreman/appropriate management of findings.
-Check dump body for leftover materials/debris that might be stuck inside and remove as necessary.
-Check fluid levels and top up as necessary (fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, hydraulic fluid, etc.).
-Warm up engine and hydraulic systems.
-Check all haul truck equipment functions to ensure proper operation (hoist system, tailgate latch mechanism, air bag drain/inflation, etc.).
-Assist in repairs as required.
-Perform any other tasks required to ready the haul truck for daily operation.
-Perform daily operation of the Haul Truck and related equipment as part of company scheduled activities.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Must be familiar with all company Safe Work Practices and Safe Job Procedures
• Must work evenings and/or weekends as required (potentially on short notice)
• Must work well with others and can maintain a positive attitude in a team environment
• Must work in an efficient manner and in a way that does not have a negative impact on the flow of the work being done
• Mandatory attendance at all company safety meetings as required
• Must arrive at least 10 minutes early and be prepared for the day – lunch, water, supplies needed for the day, etc.
• Assist in loading and unloading (both at plant and job sites) the trucks
**This position requires a valid NS Class 3 or Class 1 Driver's Licence or equivalent. Applicants chosen for an interview will be asked to provide a current NS Criminal Record Check and NS Driver's Abstract.
