It was a highlight of my career to work alongside Archbishop Miller and a devout team of support staff, design consultants, the many archdiocesan departments, all of whom came together to make possible the Archdiocese of Vancouver’s new home; St. John Paul II Pastoral Centre. JCA is grateful for the opportunity to design an administrative facility to serve the needs of the faithful and to assist in the care and growth of the “Dumos Dei” (House of God).

The inspiration for the cupola at Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre is derived from the historic “grain silo” used for storing both livestock feed and grain for export. The cupola’s mono-pitched roof suggests an equipment shed and is equipped with exhaust fans and dampers that create a venturi and stack effect for natural ventilation without the need for air conditioning. Large glazing of the eastern facing wall creates a sense of transparency - a continuation of the boreal forest inside and out.

A main feature of the Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre campus is the 41m long enclosed sky bridge that links the campus facilities so that users can access the facilities internally during cold winter months. The skybridge also functions as a quiet, sun filled contemplative and relaxing space.

Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre in Parkland County is officially complete. A stunning fall rainbow emerged after a heavy rainfall to celebrate the opening of this new retreat centre.
