With temperatures suddenly soaring to 25 degrees in Vancouver it’s time to turn over your wardrobes to spring and summer asap! Pack away winter clothes, coats, and shoes. If an item is damaged or you never wear it, either donate or sell it.

Remember to edit your front hall closet. Don’t leave winter items and shoes at the front door. Keep only the coats and shoes you wear daily to avoid an overflowing mess at your entrance.

This is the key to it all. If you have too many clothes, dishes, etc you have to clean mountains of items daily or weekly. Stop the madness! Keep a reasonable amount of items that can be managed and stored. Declutter and keep your favourites and what you need/use in all categories. Get rid of the rest. More is just more.

Do you want you want to know one of my secrets to keeping a tidy home?
Tidy like a waiter!

When dining out you rarely see a waiter/waitress/server with their hands empty. That’s because as they move through the room, or in and out of the room, they are surveying and multitasking. They make multiple stops as they go.

I apply the same principle at home. I am constantly picking things up and placing them back where they belong. Because I have systems set up, every item has a home so I can tidy quickly. If items need to go back up or down the stairs, I leave them on the staircase and take them the next time I’m headed that way. I’ve taught my family to do the same. You’d be amazed by how well this works.

Another option you might hear about is to collect all these random items in a basket and then put them away when it’s full. I’m not a huge fan of this method because you can end up zigzagging all over the house returning items. You also have to commit to emptying the basket frequently during the week and this doesn’t always happen. Avoid putting important or time sensitive items in the basket that could end up sitting in there for weeks.

While every home has an entryway, the size of that space varies greatly. But, what every one has in common is the need to be able to put your things away easily and to be able to find what you need quickly. Over the next few posts we’ll reveal various tips for small entryways. In this case, for the winter season, we’ve put bins in the top of a small closet to hold hats, gloves, and scarves. For the summer, the bin labels can be removed and the content can be replaced with more relevant items. Matching wood hangers look nice and are more solid for heavy coats. Try to keep at least 2-3 hangers empty for guests. Don’t store out of season coats or ones you don’t like or wear in your entryway or you’ll end up in an overflow situation. Edit with each season and be realistic about how many coats you need. Store out of season coats in a spare closet or storage room. Your entryway sets the tone for your home. No one wants to be confronted by clutter as soon as they walk in the door. There are so many entryway solutions and options. How’s your entryway? Tell me in the comments below.
