How long should you water new sod?

Don’t focus only on minutes.

Focus on this: the sod should be fully soaked, and the soil underneath should stay moist about an inch down during the grow-in period.

Aeration pro tip 🌱
After you aerate, leave the cores on the lawn for a week. That window is prime time to fertilize and overseed.
Once the plugs dry out, mow low. The mower chops them up and works the soil back into the holes β€” a free, natural top dress.
Healthier roots. Thicker turf. No bagged soil required.

Proud team moment.

Over the last two days, we received 9 new Google reviews β€” all 5 stars.

This offseason, we put a lot of focus into training, improving our systems, and helping our team become the best they can be for the clients we serve.

Seeing that effort show up in real feedback is a great reminder that the work behind the scenes matters.

Great service doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from preparation, communication, care, and a team that takes pride in doing things the right way.

A huge thank-you to our clients for the kind words, and to our team for showing up with professionalism every day.

Pale, slow-growing lawn this spring? It's probably not a fertilizer issue.
If your grass is greening up unevenly or looking thin even after feeding, the real culprit is usually underneath: compacted soil. This is especially common on sodded lawns and heavy clay soils, both very common across Eastern Ontario.
The University of Guelph Turfgrass Institute recommends annual aeration for most Ontario lawns, more often for clay or high traffic areas. Late April through May is the prime spring window once the soil thaws and grass resumes active growth.
Signs you need it:
Pale colour despite fertilizing
Water pools or runs off
Soil feels rock hard
Slow, patchy spring green up
What core aeration does:
Pulls small plugs of soil out so water, air, and nutrients can finally reach the root zone. It also helps break down thatch naturally over time.
DO βœ…
Aerate when soil is moist, not soaked or bone dry
Run two passes in a cross-hatch pattern on compacted or sodded lawns
Leave the cores on the surface (they break down in 2 to 4 weeks and feed the soil)
Overseed and topdress right after for best results
DON'T ❌
Rake up the plugs
Aerate frozen or waterlogged soil
Skip it on clay or sodded lawns, fertilizer alone won't fix compaction
Get the foundation right and the rest of your lawn care actually works.

Spring Cleanup: Karl Foerster Grass 🌾
See those green shoots poking through? That's your cue. Your Karl Foerster is waking up and it's time to give it a haircut.
Grab your shears and cut it back to about 6 inches from the base. You're clearing out last year's dead growth so the sun can hit those new shoots and your grass can take off for the season.
One clean cut. That's it. Your Karl Foerster will thank you.

DO βœ…
Cut back to 6 inches from the base
Wait until you see green shoots emerging
Use sharp shears or hedge trimmers for a clean cut
Bundle the dead growth with twine before cutting for easy cleanup
Compost or mulch the trimmings

DON'T ❌
Cut too low and damage the crown
Wait too long (new growth gets tangled in the dead stuff)
Leave the dead foliage, it blocks sun and air
Cut when it's soaking wet
Skip this step, your grass needs it to thrive

Drop a 🌾 if your Karl Foerster is waking up too. What's next on the spring list?

🌱 Don't panic if your lawn still looks brown β€” it's just dormant!
Every spring we get the same calls from homeowners across Ontario wondering why their lawn isn't green yet. The answer is almost always the same β€” it just needs a little help waking up.
Here's what I do first:
βœ… Pick up sticks and debris
βœ… Drop the mower to its lowest setting
βœ… Give it a good vacuum cut
Sun + a little prep = a green lawn faster than you think.
Follow along this spring β€” next up we're talking fertilization and how to really get that lawn thriving. πŸ’ͺ

Happy 40th Birthday to Kerr Sprinkler Systems!

Here's to the big 4-0 β€” and to 40 more. Here's to the past, the present, and the future.

Turns out, 40 years in business is pretty simple when you follow the K-E-R-R way:

K β€” Kinetic: Be full of energy. Be fun to be around. Treat people good and be great to deal with.

E β€” Excellence: Always be chasing excellence β€” in your work and in the way you treat people.

R β€” Reliable: Show up on time and do exactly what you tell people you're going to do.

R β€” Resilient: Show up every single day, ready to get it done.

A big thank you to our founder, Kelly Kerr, for
taking the leap of faith all those years ago and building something that has lasted four decades. And to Sally, for always being right behind him every step of the way.

Matt and I have been working alongside them since we were 10 years old. We watched this company grow from the ground up, and we've seen firsthand what hard work, good values, and treating people right can build.

As we push forward into the next 40 years, who knows where it will take us, but as long as we keep our KERR values in place and teach them to everyone around us, the team will keep growing and the future is bright.

Thank you to our amazing team and our loyal customers for being part of this journey.

Cheers !

Jason & Matt Kerr
