I was at a client’s house today who had started to paint her living room a year ago and just stopped…she didn’t feel like she was doing a good job and just wasn’t that into it.

I get it…home improvement is not for everyone and I kinda love that she just stopped - was like, nope I don’t want to do this.

A lot of the things we do as women are driven by unrealistic expectations - expectations that tell us that we “should” do these things, whatever they may be.
But, here’s the thing…you don’t have to do it. You can just stop, say nope and hire someone else to do it.
I realize that personal budgets play a factor, but if you are able to outsource things - do it.

Believe it or not, outsourcing is self care. You don’t have to do it all! Nor “should” you.

Do you have a half finished project that you need done? Send me a message and we can chat about how I can help.

How do contractors determine an estimate for the work that needs to be done in your home?

I can’t speak for all contractors but as a general rule, I figure out the time it will take and the materials needed and add them together - seems simple enough right ? But it can be tricky. In some cases you only know what’s on the surface…

For example

Photo 1: A client sent me this photo to get a quote for a small drywall repair - looks pretty straightforward.

Photo 2: I arrive at clients house to further investigate and see that the drywall can’t just be patched because it has mold in it.

Photo 3: Close up of mold in drywall

Photo 4: After removing all the moldy drywall and insulation, adding new drywall and then patching.

This is why estimates can change. Once an issue is explored it can lead to other issues you didn’t even know you had!

So, how do you budget for that as a client? When you receive an estimate from a contractor it is always a good idea to add about 25% to it to allow for some wiggle room.

That way you don’t get caught off guard with added expenses if they come up and if it’s right on budget, you’ll just have money left over!

Replaced a wobbly and sagging tread on the stairs of a 120 year old home this week.
Hardest part is getting the old tread off without damaging it.
With the new added supports under the tread, this step should last another 120 years!

Calling all young builders! Join me at Tinker School this March Break.

Our March Break Day Camp is fast approaching and there’s still room for a few more young builders to join the fun! 🔨

On March 19th, kids ages 9-12 can spend the day with us building their very own picnic table for squirrels! Along the way, they’ll learn about measuring, angles, and creativity through hands-on building. Each child will head home with the cutest miniature picnic table to proudly show off & the neighbourhood squirrels will thank you! 🐿️

This Tinkering School class will be led by Meg Wright, a Registered ECE and owner of Wright at Home, where she takes on home repairs and custom wood projects. Her knowledge and experience make her the perfect guide for this! 🪵🪚

Often the number one question that people ask me is “How much do you charge?”.

Obviously this is an important question to ask when hiring someone for any job, but there are other questions that are equally important.

Here are some questions to consider when hiring a handywoman/man:

1) Are they reliable? Will they actually show up to do the work? You may find someone with less expensive rates but if they don’t show up to do the work it won’t benefit you in the end.

2) Are they trustworthy? Will you feel comfortable with this person in your home? This is where word of mouth comes in! If you know someone who has used their services before (and felt good having them in their home) this can give you some peace of mind. Some say that peace of mind is priceless.

3) Are they insured? If something were to happen while they are working in your home, do they have insurance to cover damages? Many people forget to ask about this one! Someone who is insured may have higher rates, but will have coverage should something unexpected happen.

4) Are they skilled? Does this person have experience doing the jobs that you need done? Someone with experience will be able to do the job more quickly and efficiently - which will ultimately impact the amount you will pay for the job.

5) Are their fees within your budget? Ok, so all the other questions are great but if their fees don’t fit your budget then it’s a bit moot. If you are hiring a handy person in Ottawa, ON - you can expect to pay anywhere between $50-$100/hr. This depends on different factors, as mentioned above.

Consider all 5 questions equally when choosing the “wright” handy person for you - because they are all important factors to you being happy with someone’s service.

Yes, winter is officially here! Is your home ready for those cold months ahead?

I had the opportunity to talk to Andrew Pinsent (filling in for Bill Carroll) this morning on 580 CFRA on ways to prepare your home for winter.

Have a listen!

Andrew Pinsent fills in for Bill and is joined by Meg Wright, of Wright at Home – Handy Ma’am Services, to discuss some tips to prepare your house for this winter season.
