Yard transformation!!! ➡️ ➡️ ➡️
This area was turning into a jungle after the 2022 derecho took out and uprooted a couple trees here. Some of the stumps grew back! There was also a Manitoba stretching over the neighbour’s fence, which survived the wind storm (mostly) but it was time to go.

Had the privilege of being the first person to prune this beautiful native Red Maple, Acer rubrum (other than some previous hacking of low limbs) Swipe to see what we started with!
We elevated the crown to allow more light and better view of the house, along with clearance from the house, structural corrections, and some thinning as needed. Not shown is the melon-sized hornets nest we removed and chipped. 👀

The last major purchase/addition to the fleet; the International 4700LP. Swipe to see how it looked when I bought it June ‘23! The first “heavy commercial” vehicle in the fleet, which led to grotesque insurance premiums from which I am still trying to recover. 😅
20 yard capacity vs the 5 yard dump insert in Ol’ Yeller means no more annoying mid-day dump runs during large removals or especially intense pruning days. The extra large tool cabinet allows for safe storage of almost every tool we need on site! It’s been a fantastic upgrade.

Hey, it’s been a long while since my last post! Here’s a re-introduction…

My name is Robert Staal, and I’ve dedicated the past 10 years to arboriculture. Prior to that I spent a couple seasons in landscape maintenance and construction. My life started on a dairy farm, and though the cows have been gone since 2015, I still miss them a *litttle, some days.

This year so far has been the most busy yet; moved our family out of a 2 bed bungalow into a big old farmhouse that’s been in the family for a couple generations, just in time for baby 5 to make his entrance in January. I’m thankful for the lull in winter to have some more time with my family.

This year has also seen more growth in the business, as we are building up and training a solid team to serve clients better! I’ll share more about all that and some of the trees we’ve been taking care of in the days to come. Stay tuned!

The process:

1. Remove sod layer to establish a “tree ring”

2. Cut and roll sod to locate radial trenching

3. Excavate and loosen soil with Airspade

4. Fill trenches with a blend of manure, bonemeal and composted mulch, recover with sod

5. Expose roots around trunk for inspection and pruning

6. Cover roots to proper depth, leaving root flare exposed

7. Mulch 2-3” deep in tree ring, leaving space at the trunk

Airspade excavation of this Sugar Maple. This specialized equipment allows excavation of the root system without causing damage to the tree!

Most suburban trees suffer from a variety of soil-related issues. In this case, the tree had been planted too deep and had excess soil around the trunk. This tree developed some severe girdling roots from which it was barely surviving. With proper excavation and root pruning, we can help this tree thrive!

Airspade excavation and soil remediation can also help improve soil health and thereby tree health through loosening compacted soil and adding organic material. Heavily compacted clay is common in Ottawa, but we can help!

Extensive damage from the ice storm today. While temperatures are rising, it is advisable to stay away from your trees as there are still limbs and stems breaking from the excessive weight and wind load.
Loss of a tree is disappointing, but better than loss of life. Stay wise out there!

Check out today's work!
This Eastern White Pine suffered a major stem failure, weaking the remaining part of the tree. Due to its proximity to the house, removal was the safest option.
