Is That Fungus... or Dog Vomit? 🤮
If you’ve noticed a bright yellow or pale orange to white foamy mass spreading across your garden mulch overnight, don’t panic! It’s most likely Dog Vomit Slime Mold (Fuligo septica).
Despite its unsightly appearance (and unappealing name), here is what is actually going on in your garden beds:
It’s Not Actually a Fungus: Dog vomit slime mold is an amoeba-like organism (a myxomycete), not a true fungus. It feeds on decaying organic matter and bacteria rather than living plants.
Why It Appears in Mulch: Wood mulch provides the perfect habitat—moisture, shade, and decomposing bark or wood chips. Warm, humid weather causes it to grow rapidly almost overnight.
Is It Harmful?: No! It won’t harm your plants, pets, or soil. In fact, it breaks down mulch into rich organic matter, contributing to soil health.
What to Do:
If the look bothers you, simply scrape it off with a shovel, turn the mulch over to dry it out, or let it dry up naturally into a hard, crusty white powder.
