I haven’t reached perfection—and probably never will—but I’m doing a lot better at avoiding food waste at home by following a few simple golden rules. 😁 In the last two weeks, I’ve only had to compost about a cup of cooked spaghetti!
Our grocery bill has also gone down by shopping the sales more intentionally. I do go to Costco for certain staples like nuts, olive oil, and whole wheat flour since I bake bread regularly and go through those quickly. But I skip other items there because the quantities are so large that they can end up causing waste.
Do you have any tips that help you reduce food waste and save money on groceries? 🛒🥕🥬

I truly love Valentine’s Day 💕❤️as a chance to tell the people who mean the world to me just how much I love them. For me, the simplest and most meaningful gestures are always the best. Homemade gifts, made from the heart, carry so much more meaning than the mass-produced stuff filling the shelves at Dollarama, Walmart, or Amazon. Really—how many stuffed toys or pieces of jewelry does one person need? 🤔
I love baking special treats for friends and family, and Dave and I enjoy going out for a special meal together. I always look forward to reading what he writes me in a card. But for years now, we’ve agreed to stop spending money on little trinkets that just end up cluttering our home. 🏠
Maybe this year, have a small conversation with your loved one and consider saving that money for a special outing or even a future getaway instead. Just a little food for thought… ❤️ How do you celebrate Valentine’s, Galentine’s or Friendlentine’s? 😍

It was a great month, 🎉and I’m really happy with how my Buy Nothing challenge saved me about $550. 💰There’s still room for improvement—especially when it comes to purchases and food management—but I’m motivated to do better this month. Food waste costs every household so much money and can be almost eliminated. Will you join me for a Low-Buy February challenge? 💕

What a boost to the morale! 🌞 Dave and I enjoyed this fabulous day. Oh, and the coat I’m wearing was bought by my mom in 1986. 🥺❤️ What boosts your morale in February?

Heart shaped cookies are now ready for family, friends and neighbours. We can all use some love. ❤️
The recipe was from . Baking some treats fit so well with my buy nothing challenge: I had seen 6 Valentines Day cookies at a bakery for 25$. I made a double recipe of 24 cookies for about 7$ (butter is expensive). Homemade tastes better, doesn’t it? 🥰

When I stopped consuming this month, I began to notice just how much I already have.✨ I rediscovered shirts I’d completely forgotten about. On a trip to Montreal, I felt tempted to buy a merino wool sweater—until I decluttered my closet and realized I already own one. 🤯
That led me to reflect on why we spend. I think a lot of it comes from boredom or the desire for a little treat. And there’s nothing wrong with treating ourselves once in a while. But it’s worth asking what void our spending is filling when it becomes our go-to way to feel good. Are we wandering a mall because we’re seeking connection? 💕 Would inviting friends over for tea and conversation meet that need more fully? ❤️
Another thing I’ve noticed is how much calmer I feel after decluttering my home. Removing items I no longer use has reduced my stress and made my space feel lighter. When you let go of things you bought years ago, you often realize they no longer reflect who you are. That makes it easier to see what does align with your current values.
My biggest takeaway? It’s okay to be bored sometimes. It’s okay to sit with stillness and figure out what you actually want to do next. We don’t always need to fill our time with scrolling or searching for the next thing to buy in hopes it will make us happy. By slowing down, we give ourselves space to reflect on what truly matters.
And this isn’t just about not buying things. I still struggle with limiting social media so I can slow down more and be present in “real” time with friends and family.
Do any of these reflections or challenges resonate with you? ❤️

✨COMMUNITY✨ I love events that revive the tradition of women passing skills to other women—knowledge carried through generations. You can read a cookbook, but it’s not the same as someone standing beside you, showing you how to stretch the dough, shape a boule and score the loaf. 🍞 Last night, some friends from Church came to our house and it was such a joy for me to be teaching again after having retired from teaching last June. 🥰
Almost ten years ago, I was lucky enough to be taught by my beautiful mentor, . I wrote to her and asked if she would show me how to bake bread. She invited me into her home, and we spent a morning baking together. She asked for nothing in return. Her generosity touched my heart deeply. ❤️
Like her, I love teaching others this craft, because there is nothing quite like baking nourishing, naturally fermented bread for our friends and family. In a world that can often feel harsh, these moments of grace, connection, and community matter more than ever.❤️

The Buy Nothing challenge this week went well 😃. My pantry, freezer, and fridge are pretty bare as we’ve been eating through what I had stored to avoid food waste. 👍
I did have to spend money on a new battery for my watch, but at $30 it felt like a win compared to buying a new Fitbit after mine died. The watch is about 15 years old, and I actually love it—it fits with my desire to live a more analog life and helps me avoid reflexively checking the news the way I used to when I checked the time on my phone.
I also spent $27 on Netflix. I do watch shows and movies, and it’s still cheaper than going out. My daughter enjoys it too, so for now we’re keeping this service.
I’m continuing to declutter my clothes with the goal of owning around 150 pieces—the North American average. 👗It’s getting harder now, as I’m letting go of things I genuinely like. Still, simplifying my life in so many areas feels worth it. I believe it will lead to a more unhurried way of living. 🥰
I’m currently reading The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, and it’s reinforcing my belief that a more minimalist life can lead to greater contentment—learning to be happy with what we already have. 😊❤️
Are you trying to live with less or reduce your spending? What have been some of your wins lately?

I’m very happy with my wins for this second week of Buy Nothing January. 😀I was especially surprised when I put up on a buy nothing Facebook group all my decluttered clothes and they were picked up the next morning. They’re off to an organization that helps homeless people. It feels so good to give what I really don’t need. 😍 What were some of your wins this week? ☀️❄️
