Xeriscaping doesn't have to mean a yard full of rock.

This planting combines drought-tolerant, pollinator-friendly plants with layers of texture, colour, and seasonal interest. By choosing plants adapted to our Okanagan climate, we're creating a landscape that requires less water, supports local wildlife, and still delivers plenty of curb appeal.

Thoughtful plant selection. Smarter water use. Beautiful results.

🐝 Friend or Foe? IPM Edition

Meet the Green Sweat Bee. πŸ’š
Despite the name, these tiny metallic green bees are some of the hardest-working pollinators in the garden.

You'll often find them visiting flowers in search of nectar and pollen, helping support healthy blooms, fruits, and seeds along the way.

As part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, beneficial insects like these are worth protecting. A diverse garden full of pollinators is often a healthier, more resilient garden.

Meet the Hummingbird Moth (Hyles lineata), also known as the White-lined Sphinx.

Verdict: FRIEND βœ…

At first glance, these fascinating insects are often mistaken for tiny hummingbirds as they hover from flower to flower sipping nectar. They are important pollinators that help support healthy gardens, native ecosystems, and many of our favourite flowering plants.

Their caterpillars may occasionally feed on plants, but they rarely cause significant damage in home landscapes and are generally not considered a pest.

Fun fact: The unusual brown chrysalis is often found beneath the soil surface in garden beds and landscape plantings. If you uncover one while digging, consider gently placing it back into a protected area and letting nature take its course.
Sometimes the most beneficial creatures in our gardens are the ones we know the least about.

Have you ever spotted a hummingbird moth in your garden?

I'm an artist.

My canvas just happens to be the landscape.
Selecting seasonal colour, planning succession of bloom, matching plants to site conditions, and creating beautiful, functional spaces is both an art and a science.
The goal isn't just a garden that looks good today. It's a landscape that shines through every season. 🌿

🌱 Friend or Foe? IPM Edition 🌱

Today's pest detective adventure led to an interesting discovery hiding inside what appeared to be healthy shrubs.

A little sawdust around the crown turned into a closer inspection, which revealed hollow stems, extensive tunneling, and stem borer larvae feeding inside the plant.

πŸ› The culprit: Stem Borers

Unlike many garden pests, stem borers spend most of their lives hidden inside the plant where they feed on the soft tissue within stems and branches.

Signs to watch for:

πŸ” Sawdust-like frass around the base of the plant
πŸ” Small holes in stems or branches
πŸ” Wilting or dieback on otherwise healthy plants
πŸ” Hollow stems when pruning
πŸ” Reduced vigor and poor growth

🚨 Threat Level: 8/10

While a single borer may only damage a stem, multiple larvae throughout a plant can significantly weaken shrubs and young plantings.

Wise Roots Tip:

Integrated Pest Management starts with observation. Sometimes the best tool in the garden isn't a spray or fertilizer. It's taking the time to look a little closer.

Have you ever cut into a branch and found something unexpected hiding inside?
