Water main blew under the main road in Petawawa and straight up lifted the asphalt off the base.

Not my job site, I just walked through for a closer look 👀
But this is exactly what happens when:
• water gets underneath
• the base gets washed out
• there’s no proper drainage

Asphalt doesn’t “just fail”, something underneath gives out first.
