Eternal Seed is a company that grew out of a personal, family interest in heirloom varieties. The hybrid varieties offered today have been bred for ‘shipability‘. Not an attractive criteria when no more than 100 feet separates our garden from our kitchen. We also have a concern for the ongoing reduction in bio-genetic diversity. It is extremely important that the diversity of the past be preserved in order to maintain variety in our food source.

So here we are after two weeks - actually on May 14. It is hard to tell but the Garden Mix and Turf mix have grown a little. The Fir and amender not at all. Our standard compost is doing the best with the worm castings slightly behind.

So here is the experiment . Five pots. One each containing growing medium and a small Principe Borghese tomato plant. The five mediums are:
- locally supplied Garden mix
- locally supplied Turf mix
- locally supplied Amender created from compost and mixed one part with three parts fir chips (quite small)
- standard pro mix with a hand full of worm castings put under the plant when planting
- our usual soil mixed with the compost Gary created last year half and half

Here they are. All in saucers

We started a growing medium test today. We have samples from a local soil retailer and a local worm castings seller . Usually we grow in a mix of soil and our own compost so that is our 'control'. We filled five pots all the same size. One with each of the mixes we are comparing and one our control. As we are removing the retail tables and replacing them with raised beds for growing food we will need to bring in more growing medium once we have exhausted what we have so this is an important question for us. We will still have a, much smaller, retail area.
