Poppy Talk! Now that winter is behind us(hopefully!) Now is the time to plant your poppies. There are a few different kinds to be aware of….. so let’s chat!

✨ Iceland poppies - these beauties are ok to transplant. They can be started indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost. They don’t like the heat of the summer so be sure you start them early enough that they flower before the summer heat hits. For most of us this timeline has already passed so add it to the list for next winters seed starting!
✨ Breadseed poppies - These do best when direct sown as they do not like transplanting. As soon as the soil can be worked you can start to sow your seeds!
These poppies can also be great as a garden filler as they self seed.
✨Shirley poppies - These also do not like to be transplanted so it is best to sow them directly in the garden. Shirley poppies are one of the easiest to grow. It also is one of the longest flowering poppies and can last up to six weeks.
✨ Oriental (Papaver) poppy - THE most spectacular in my opinion! The best time to plant these poppies is in the fall. However container grow they can be planted in the spring and transplanted to the garden in the fall. They like well draining soil and once established are virtually care free! I’m not going to lie, it did take me several years till I could get these beauties established in my garden (then of course I moved) but they are worth every effort I promise!
