CHELSEA GARDEN SHOW - CONTAINER GARDENS - I loved this small patio filled with beautifully-planted containers and water features with water bubbling from rustic pipeworks. This was called the Whittard of Chelsea Garden. In their own words: “A tranquil courtyard retreat marks 140 years of the simple pleasure of enjoying a Whittard of Chelsea unique tea blend. Planting includes species used in the creation of Whittard's recipes, while a water feature brings to mind the familiar sound of pouring the perfect cup.”

FLORAL BALLOONS! Fabulous ornamental onions or provide interest in the famous double border at RHS Garden Wisley which won’t come into its own until the summer perennials starts. Until then, the onions are holding the fort. You might think of doing the same. ;-)

CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW - Tokonoma
Garden - SANUMAYA no NIWA - This beautiful Japanese garden was just an empty plot of land before the show and will be again after the show. During the show it offered a bit of serenity from the crowds of people. Here is the designer’s description: “Reflecting the designer's childhood, this garden is a family sanctuary viewed from a traditional tokonoma: a formal yet familiar gathering place for guests and loved ones. Beyond this threshold lies a soothing haven of elegant, traditional plantings, deeply infused with evocative autumnal hues.”

ESSENTIAL ORNAMENTAL ONIONS - Everyone needs ornamental onions to bridge the gap between spring and summer. We have lots potted up at Phoenix ready to go (first pic). Right now I’m leading a tour in the UK and there is hardly a garden that doesn’t use them extensively, especially in their summer borders where they are adding interest as spring flowers wane with summer perennials still a 3-4 weeks or so away (see the rest of the pics). At Phoenix Perennials we have ornamental onions available potted up and growing through spring and again as bulbs in fall.
