Seed Trays

I have tried dozens of different seed starting methods as I am perpetually searching for the perfect fit that matches my gardening style and needs.

From peat pots to soil blocking. Some methods are only just a fling, while others have lasted over many years.

I am currently finding great success in the 72 cell tray pictured. Used by professionals in commercial nurseries, these deep-root seed starters have big cells with lots of rooting area to form transplants that grow faster than they would in regular cell packs.

The grooved sidewalls direct the roots straight down, discouraging root spiralling, which can happen in other containers. Each cell has an opening at the bottom that air-prunes roots and also lets you water from the bottom-up. Finished transplants slip out easily by pushing up through the bottom opening.

All of my seed trays are places in a heavy propagation tray and all my seedlings are watered from the bottom-up. I have increased propagation rates and reduced damping-off. That's a win!

Send me a message if you want to know more about this and other seed starting methods or need help tweaking your current propagation styles.

Always hard bringing the seedling babies out for their first night in the greenhouse. However, last night was only a low of 4. I will wait until after the weekend before I plant these tomatoes into individual pots.

I was walking around the garden yesterday and found a few gems that I’ll be bringing to the plant exchange. To list a few:

Parsley, horseradish, chives, lovage, borage, globe thistle.

I also will be donating a plug or two from my cut flower collection:

Ammi, daucus, straw flower, zinnia ( a few varieties), gigantium poppy, salvia.

How it works: bring your extra seedlings and yard treasures to the courtyard beside Mountain Nugget and leave with “new-to-you” treats for your garden.

There will be tape and sharpies for labelling pots. Bring a box for taking plants home. 🌱
