Squirrel House Gardens has been a Labour of Love. As a matter of fact that is what I call my seminar. We purchased the unloved property in 1975. It grew organically with no grand plan. From the outset we planted for wildlife. Now the garden is alive with butterflies, toads, frogs, all singing in the night…a jungle of sound. What could be more perfect. My heart flutters at the siting of the first hummingbird…more excitement when the oriole scout arrives. Even more excitement when we see a deer, or turkeys on the front lawn…everyday another gift from nature. That is what Squirrel House gardens is about…... Nature and the environment. Gardening is like meditation. Once you start it is so easy to get carried away. I get lost in the muddle of my thoughts and before I know it I am dreaming a field of brightly coloured poppies. Days end I am exhausted but rejuvenated. All is well with the world. Problems forgotten. I wish everyone could experience the healing power of the garden. Lets make garden tourism a national obsession! Below some participants. If you would like to participate please feel free to contact us. Stuart G. McPherson Lithographer, Photographer. Stuart has over 300 images on the Canadian Geographic sight. Included photos Monarchs and “some” of the progression, egg laying-caterpillar-J form- chrysalis-emergence- drying and flying away. He started as a wild life photographer with lots of wild flower and bird photo's. Sitting in a blind at night watching owl activities was a close encounter of another kind. Life was immensely enriched, mentally, emotionally and spiritually by the
time and effort spent in observing and photographing birds. Switching to table top and black light photography in later years. For those who have the courage to take the challenge, photography can become a powerful
tool to express oneself artistically. Aristotle said- "The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their
inward significance". Vic Unger Bee Guru
Victor Unger has been working with bees for virtually his entire life. Now at 75 years young, his passion for their well being has never been stronger. With the widespread rapid decline of the bee population Victor is eager to share his knowledge of honey bees and help spread the word of what we can do about the decline that has affected the entire world. He is often left with only 10 hives in the Spring but during the summer he manages to grow them to around 40 colonies throughout the Niagara Region. Victor is well known to the pest control companies who no longer destroy honey bees. Vic is often called during the swarming season to collect bees from unwanted areas. He does so with great enthusiasm at a moments notice jumping into his "bee-mobile" always at the ready. Victor will have fresh pollinated honey straight from the hive for sampling.
