Shamrock Park Community Garden (SPCG) is located at the ‘Shamrock Park’ in the north end of Saint John, N.B. Canada.
2016 Update with previous year highlights following:
Shamrock Park Community Gardens sixth year (2016) proved to be a great success for everyone involved. All 38 of our plots were filled with returning gardeners, beginner gardeners and some newcomers who wanted to join in on Gardeni

ng in Atlantic Canada. With all of our new gardeners we saw new produce growing down at the SPCG. Things like Inca Berries and Tomatillos were a few of the new and exciting varieties that did super well in our region producing lots of fruit. Some of our events this year included our Plant-It Day, A Scarecrow Contest, Veggie Contest and our Clean-Up Day is scheduled for the 5th of November. We did miss out on our Wet & Wild Water Fun Day due to thunder and rain this year, but it shall return next year as this is usually one of our finest community events. Many of our Gardeners have been branching out and growing produce in other location, like in their back yards, on their roof-tops, under lighting indoors, and by hydroponics in our Greenhouse planted by our very own President, Cindy Langille. Cindy’s whole family also started planting and growing (very successfully I might add) in ‘straw-bales’ this year right outside her kitchen door. Many Gardeners placed their finest produce into Saint John’s Exhibition this year with many, many first prize ribbons being awarded to our Gardeners. For the second year in a row we have some gardeners who will be doing winter gardening again as we test our growing abilities and experimental experiences. One thing is for sure though, we have all grown, grown, grown in the best ways possible. Shamrock Park Community Garden is an oasis of life. ~ Cherie Cormier (Secretary)

Spring of 2011 marked our very first year planting and growing in the new Shamrock Park Community Garden. It was a very exciting opportunity for many north end residents to become more active and interactive community members while taking advantage of becoming more food secure for themselves and their loved ones. We had a great mix of beginner and experienced gardeners from different areas of the city take to the soil and dig in. In 2012, our second year growing, we added a beautiful Rock Flower Garden for flowers and our Fruiting Trees. Cherry Trees were donated to our Community Garden from The Home Depot store. The Home Depot also took action by volunteering to help us build and supplied the wood for our new Herb Planter boxes. Thank you to The Home Depot from everyone at the Shamrock Park Community Garden. We love our new Herb Planter Boxes and Benches! Going back to 2013 we had 22 garden plots of a standard size measuring 20" feet L x 5" feet W. Four of the 22 plots were 'Raised Bed Plots' for Seniors and or wheelchair accessibility. We received funding in the form of a government grant and with lots of community supporters/volunteers and gardeners we added 4 more Raised Bed Plots. We had a fantastic Expand-It Day Event down at the garden to kick off our desire to Expand the garden area creating more plots for even more community gardeners. We even had a dream to build a Green-House and by the end of November 2013 we had it. Completely built and waiting for spring 2014. It was a very productive, successful, cooperative, amazing Year for all. Special thank you to the City of Saint John for your support in helping us Grow and Expand. In the spring of 2014 we went through the second phase of our major expansion for Shamrock Park Community Garden. We adding by hand all the 12 new ground plots. Nothing but a baron lot of weedy soil laid ahead of us that spring. Cultivating 12 additional ground plots from scratch is not an easy task to say the least. But it was accomplished along with a new Compost Area. Needless to say, hundreds of volunteer hours were spent preparing our new soil and space which now consists of 30 ground plots and 8 raised bed plots. An amazing labor of love and dedication was expressed by all.
2015 brought more changes and continued growth for the SPCG as we add to our gardening area with some Tired-In Pumpkin Patches. Bird houses were built by one of our very own gardeners, John Caley, to hang among the trees. Cindy tried her hand at Hydroponic Growing in our Green-House to the delight of everyone this year. Many of our Gardeners decided to stretch their wings this year and entered some of their produce into the Saint John Exhibition winning many first prize ribbons. We learned much and great fun was had by all. Everyone can help with planting, weeding and taking care of our Rock and Herb Gardens. It's for everyone to enjoy, share and grow, grow, grow in.

Our manure was delivered today so we will be in great shape for spring!!

Just a quick update as the end of the season is near:
1) Manure is going to be delivered on Monday so if anyone wants some of the nice soil piled there right now, you’ll have to be quick.
2) Plots should be cleaned out in the next few weeks. We hope to see all of you back next year but sometimes life throws curve balls so we’d like plots in good order in case we have new gardeners.
Old plants can go in the compost piles at the back of the garden with weeds going in the compost bins. Please make sure to shake as much soil off the roots as you can, it makes the bins really heavy and takes soil from your plot.
There are gardeners who have Brussels sprouts, Swiss chard, etc and that is not an issue.
3) For those of you who’d like to try planting some garlic, around Halloween is a good time to get it into the ground. This allows some root growth before the winter comes. Lots of good resources online.
This year’s season started off poorly but ended on a great note with lots of lovely produce. Hoping that next year we have a wee bit more rain though lol!

Cindy batted her lashes at the city workers this morning and they kindly pushed back what was left of our manure pile. They did a shallow scoop first to push the weeds to the back leaving us some lovely soil. Great for those planting garlic! We are looking at ordering our new manure this fall so it will be available early in the spring.

Some of the gardeners realized this morning that the fence has been cut between plots 2 and 3. This was the entrance for the deer and will be repaired this weekend. We obviously have other visitors as well so please be safe.

We have a new gardener that has arrived late to the season. She has been in the garden at least twice so just keep an eye out.

Sometime Wednesday night the shed was broken into and the latch on the door was broken. A new latch was installed last evening but the old lock doesn’t fit. Will try to remedy that today but in the meantime the shed has a different lock so won’t be accessible.
Nothing was stolen but please be aware if you are down to the garden in off hours.

09/16/2025

Water is back on. Thanks to the city for such quick service.

09/15/2025

Garden water is turned off right now so no one can water. I’ll post when the repair is done.

09/15/2025

We are aware that there is a cut in the city waterline between plots 2 and 3. The line has been taped but is still leaking. The city has been notified.
