The real Yule log is not a cake:
The original Yule log is made of wood. This European custom dating from the 12th century was to bring home a log of hardwood and burn it on the evening of December 24 after a few rituals based on religious beliefs. Its ashes were believed to have protective virtues for the household as well as for the crops if they were subsequently spread in the fields. However, the use of wood-burning stoves in the 19th century to replace hearths led the original tradition to evolve into a small wooden log placed on the Christmas meal table and decorated in a festive way. It was finally in the 1960s - 70s that this real wood log was replaced by a pastry, still in the shape of a log, to the delight of gourmets.
At Cayaki, we have remained faithful to tradition, and it is always real cedar that we burn to make our charred wood claddings. 🙂
Happy Holidays!
