Ever wonder why we sometimes use an underlayment and other times skip it? Let’s break down Subfloor vs. Underlayment.
The Subfloor: This is your structural base (usually plywood or OSB attached to your floor joists). It’s the backbone of your room.
The Underlayment: This is the extra layer that goes on top of the subfloor.
When can you SKIP underlayment?
If you’re laying down finished materials like engineered hardwood, solid wood, or luxury vinyl plank (LVP), you usually don’t need it. You can install right over a clean, level subfloor.
When do you NEED underlayment?
1 To Match Floor Heights: If you’re transitioning from tile in the kitchen to engineered wood in the living room, an underlayment helps level the playing field so you don’t trip.
2 To Prevent Cracking (Uncoupling): For tile floors, a specialized underlayment (like an uncoupling membrane) is a lifesaver. It separates the tile from the subfloor, allowing the subfloor to naturally shift and move without cracking your beautiful tile and grout.
