Creeping Bellflower is the worst. And this is what it looks like currently.

If only more people understood how ecologically disruptive it is. I’d put it right up there with Garlic Mustard, Buckthorn, and Dame’s Rocket in terms of how complacent we are about allowing it to spread across our landscapes—despite how damaging these species are.

Once Creeping Bellflower is in your yard, good luck getting rid of it.

And get rid of it you should. Pull it, cover it, spray it—I don’t care how you do it. Just know that pulling alone won’t eradicate it, and covering it with a tarp won’t either unless you’re willing to leave it for a very long time. The only ways I’ve successfully removed it are by physically digging out the soil and roots, or using herbicide. If you just let it be, it will completely take over your yard.

Sure, it looks nice—but it has no natural biological controls. Over time, it forms a dense monoculture that prevents other species from surviving. Before you know it, you’ve got an entire hillside covered with nothing but Creeping Bellflower (and maybe a dog peeing on it, too).

Monocultures shouldn’t occur naturally. The only place I’ve ever seen a monoculture as the norm is in salt marshes, where Smooth Cordgrass (Spartina) dominates. Creeping Bellflower blooms all at once, providing floral resources in a short burst, then nothing for the rest of the year. Our native insects didn’t evolve with it—and they can’t depend on it once it becomes the only thing growing.

PLEASE REMOVE YOUR CREEPING BELLFLOWER

Wow, December 1st! Funny how it sneaks up on us every year!
We're back with lots of goodies - jams, preserves, and relishes. We also have some new flavours that we've gotten really great feedback about.

Have you ever tried a strawberry jam made with balsamic vinegar and ground pepper?
How about a boozy rhubarb and orange jam?
Or a strawberry wine jelly?

We offer a variety of sizes, so you can buy that perfect hostess gift, stocking stuffer, or a family size jar of your favourite jam!

Of course, our unsweetened apple sauce made with only hand picked local apples deserves a shout out too!

To order, please send us a message.

We are setting up at the market with lots of jams and preserves. We’d love to see you! Come say hello and pick up a coup...
