The Indigenous Centre of Excellence proposed by Saskatoon Tribal Council would have seen the historic Lutheran Seminary complex on the University of Saskatchewan campus adapted to become a dedicated Indigenous student residence with wraparound supports such as childcare, an Elder in residence, traditional dining, wellness facilities, a ceremonial space and an Indigenous library all located on the land and within walking distance to two major post secondary institutions. 30% of the funding for this Indigenous-led project was identified in the pre-design phase and the Lutheran Theological Seminary offered to donate the building; an Act of Reconciliation. In addition to supporting sustainability and conserving a heritage building, the facility would have represented action towards many of the University’s stated Indigenous objectives.
Unfortunately, the University of Saskatchewan Board of Governors instead voted to demolish the building.
Along with many members of our community, we are proud to have supported in this vision. Like and share to show it the support it deserves and visit our website for the full proposal.
