There it is! The baby’s baby!

In May 2020, I harvested my first pineapple from Mama…my first pineapple plant. Since then she produced one more and has grown a few side shoots. One produced a pineapple in June,I think. When I harvested Mama’s first baby I planted the baby’s top notch. It is now very large and producing a baby. The baby is having a baby! It’s still very small but I’ll try to take a picture . I’ll take some later as well. Woo. Hoo!

Here we go again! Mama sent out a large sideshoot ,nourished it then died. She did such a good job that we now have a baby pineapple growing. This is number 2. Yeah me! If it continues to grow at this rate,it should be ready for Thanksgiving. I will now start putting regular posts!

Please be reminded that I no longer sell bedding plants. This is why I want to sell the balance of my supplies. I still love talking plants though!

I have a variety of used pots and baskets, carrying trays,to sell. Will post pictures. Would like a buyer to come get all at one time.

Received a question regarding timing regarding rooting fertilizer. I like a continuous feed, minimum dose , recommended on container. You might want to switch to a blooming one during budding and blooming then go back to rooting. I think mid august is a good timeline to look at cutting back . The appearance of the plants may also be a good measure to use. “ We’re getting tired look”. Next will be cut back on water.

I hope I’ve helped some of you if you’re seeing something similar on your plantings. I once had chemical damage on some tomatoes and similar “gobbled” growth appeared . I merely fed rooting fertilizer, allowed the plant to wrap its brain around its problem ,heal and then it started sending normal growth. It takes time but it always does…..always.

What should one do if one suspects your plantings are in trouble during this time of extreme heat. Provide shade if possible. Don’t overwater. Fertilize with rooting fertilizer ,as the plant pathologist suggested….eg….10-52-10 higher middle number! Always look after the roots, don’t force your plants to grow on the top as there has to be a foundation to support the top. I always taught my customers that by saying ….when you build a house you ensure your building on rock ,not sand and you can add several storeys, your building surviving the test of time. I was unable to bring the baskets back to a good stage as the condition was too far advanced. We have a beautiful Virginia Creeper vine on the north side of our house…always in the shade until it reaches a certain height and it had similar growth as the petunia baskets. . We are experiencing a similar ,if not worse type of year.

Let’s go back to July 2006. It was very HOT and HUMID! Rather like we are facing this week. I learned valuable information about plants and this type of growing conditions. Some very beautiful baskets that we had planted for the town started to show signs of stress. The foliage became leathery, small and stringy looking in appearance. Upon close perusal I also noticed lots of seed pods, large to small in size.Feeder roots had disappeared. Now the baskets were being watered daily, probably fertilized once a week. WHY was this happening? Through the 32 years of green housing I dealt with a very reputable seed company,Ball Superior. Of course there are others,it so happens that’s where I bought the seeds ,plugs, and cuttings I used. One of the perks was that I had access to plant scientists and pathologists. He concurred that heat stress was the root of our problem. Apparently once the humidex reaches 40 plant shut down,go to “desert mode”. So what does that mean? Shut down,no absorption of water,no absorption of nutrients….you keep watering….roots rot from being too wet for too long. Plants can be wilted but soil will be wet. Plants feel they are not going to survive,so make lots of seed because is that not the purpose a plant feels? Bloom, make seed to survive and keep the species going.
