🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸 Missing our American adventures…
As Canadians, we’ve always loved visiting the United States. For us, crossing the border was never just about going somewhere else — it was about the adventure, the people, the food, the little towns, and never knowing exactly where the road might take us.
When we lived in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and later closer to Sarnia, “jumping the ditch,” as we used to call it, was just something you did. Sometimes there was a plan… and sometimes we simply jumped in the car and went exploring. 🇨🇦🚗🇺🇸
We spent so many wonderful times in Caseville, Michigan, staying at a great lodge we returned to again and again. We’d travel up the Thumb, explore little communities, stop wherever looked interesting, and just enjoy being there.
And then there were the spontaneous trips to Frankenmuth — sometimes finding a great hotel at the last minute and turning an ordinary weekend into an unforgettable adventure.
Those are the memories I think about now.
It makes me sad that something that once felt so easy and welcoming has become more difficult for Canadians. The current administration and the policies coming out of Washington have made many Canadians think twice about travelling south of the border.
And I think that’s unfortunate, because Canadians love so much about the United States. ❤️
We love the friendships we’ve made, the places we’ve discovered, the small towns, the big cities, the hospitality, the history, the scenery — and those spontaneous road trips where the destination was sometimes the least important part of the journey.
We’ve never seen the border as something that should divide us. We’ve always seen it as something we crossed to discover more of what our neighbours had to offer.
I hope we get back to a time when Canadians once again feel excited to simply jump in the car, cross the border, and see where the road takes us.
Until then, I’ll be holding onto those memories — and looking forward to making more. 🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
Here’s to Caseville, the Michigan Thumb, Frankenmuth, roadside adventures, last-minute hotels, and all those “let’s just go” trips.
