🍂 PUT DOWN THE PRUNERS! ✂️🌿

Fall garden cleanup doesn’t necessarily mean cutting everything to the ground.

In fact, leaving certain perennials standing through the winter can be one of the best things you can do for your garden — and the wildlife that calls it home. 🐝🐦

PERENNIALS WORTH LEAVING UNTIL SPRING:

🌸 Coneflowers (Echinacea)
Those dried seed heads are a valuable winter food source for birds, especially finches.

🌼 Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia)
Their seed heads provide food for birds, while the hollow and dried stems can provide overwintering habitat for beneficial insects.

🌿 Joe-Pye W**d
Leave those tall stems standing! They provide winter structure and habitat, and the dried flower heads look beautiful with frost and snow.

🌾 Ornamental & Native Grasses
Little bluestem, switchgrass, prairie dropseed and many ornamental grasses provide winter interest, shelter and seeds. Save the haircut for early spring.

🌸 Sedum / Stonecrop
The dried flower heads hold their shape beautifully through winter and can provide seeds for birds.

🌼 Asters
Another excellent plant to leave standing. Their stems and leaf litter can provide valuable overwintering habitat for insects.

🌻 Perennial Sunflowers & Other Seed-Producing Perennials
If the seed heads are still intact, consider leaving them for your feathered winter visitors.

🐝 WHY LEAVE THE MESS?

Many native bees and other beneficial insects spend winter tucked inside hollow stems, beneath leaves or within plant debris. Birds depend on seeds that remain in the garden long after the flowers disappear.

And those dried stems and seed heads? Once they’re covered in frost or snow, they can make a winter garden absolutely beautiful. ❄️

What SHOULD you remove?

Diseased or heavily pest-infested foliage is generally better removed rather than left to overwinter. Plants that turn into wet, collapsed mush can also be tidied up as needed.

Otherwise, there’s nothing wrong with letting the garden look a little wild.

🌱 Come spring, cut the old growth back once temperatures begin warming and the garden starts waking up.

A perfectly tidy fall garden might look nice to us…

…but sometimes a slightly messy garden is exactly what nature needs. 💚

Good morning from the garden. 🌿☀️

September may be creeping in, but the gardens aren’t finished showing off just yet.

There’s something about these late-summer blooms — a little weathered, a little wild, and still determined to put on a show. 💛

We spend so much of the season planting, pruning, weeding and tidying that sometimes it’s worth stopping for a second to appreciate the little moments happening right in front of us.

Here’s to soaking up every last bit of colour before fall takes the reins. 🍂

Apparently our jobsites are becoming a bit of a wildlife sanctuary… although this week’s visitor was considerably less alive than usual. 😂 🐧

Found this little fella buried while digging out a mature rose bush last week. No idea how long he’d been down there, but judging by his condition… he’s seen some things. 😂

Frogs, toads, birds, bugs, neighbourhood pets, and now long-lost stuffed penguins — apparently all walks of life are welcome at a Northern Edge jobsite. 🌿

We dug him up, dusted him off and gave him a moment in the sunshine before carrying on with the day.

You truly never know what you’re going to uncover when you start digging in an established garden. 😂

Today’s adventure! 🌿

A little garden rearranging was on the agenda today — relocating a couple of mature shrubs and a rose bush, adding a new shrub, removing sod and giving these beds some much-needed room to breathe.

We’re so close to the finish line! A fresh edge, some beautiful edging stone and mulch will pull the whole thing together… but Mother Nature apparently decided we were done for the day. 🌧️😂

Sometimes landscaping means knowing when to put the shovel down and let the rain do its thing.

Stay tuned for the finished transformation — this one is already looking GOOD. 👀🌿

🐸 Today’s little garden visitor! 🌿💚

One of the best parts of spending our days working in gardens is never knowing who might stop by to supervise. 😂

This tiny tree frog decided my shoulder was apparently the perfect place to hang out for a while — and I certainly wasn’t going to argue with that little face.

Healthy gardens aren’t just about beautiful plants. They create little ecosystems full of life, from pollinators and birds to adorable hitchhikers like this one. 🌱🐸

Safe to say, Northern Edge Landscapes officially has a new (very tiny) crew member.
His productivity is questionable, but morale has improved significantly. 😂💚

📧 Northern Edge has a new email! 🌿

As Northern Edge Landscapes continues to grow, I’m slowly getting all those little behind-the-scenes business pieces organized — and this one made me ridiculously happy. 😂

We officially have our very own business email:

[email protected]

Going forward, this will be our primary email for quotes, invoices, booking inquiries and general business correspondence.

If you already have my other contact information, don’t worry — you can still reach me! This is simply another little step toward keeping Northern Edge organized and making communication easier for everyone.

And somehow, SOMEHOW, the exact business name was still available. I’m taking that as a win. 😂🌿

Thank you to everyone who has supported this little business as it continues to grow. Every new client, referral, share and kind word means more than you know. 💚

❄️🌲 I need your opinion on something, Northern Edge friends! 🌲❄️

I’ve been putting some thought into what Northern Edge could offer once our gardens go to sleep for the season…and I keep coming back to something I absolutely loved doing during my years at the garden centre.

Custom winter & holiday decorating.

I’m considering offering an on-site service this coming season where I would come to your home and create custom evergreen planters using fresh pine, cedar, spruce, birch, berries, pinecones and other beautiful seasonal touches — but I’d love to take it a step further.

Think coordinating fresh garland, wreaths, railings, front entrances and full porch styling, all designed specifically to complement your home rather than choosing something pre-made off a shelf.

Before I start investing in mountains of evergreens 😂🌲, I want to hear from YOU.

Would this be a service you’d consider booking?

And if so, what would interest you most?

🌲 Custom evergreen planters
🏡 Planters + front entrance/porch styling
🎄 Fresh garland
✨ Full holiday exterior decorating
🏢 Commercial/business holiday displays

I’ve included a few photos of seasonal work I’ve designed in previous years working at a high end garden centre so you can get an idea of the style and scale I’m talking about.

If there’s enough interest, Northern Edge may just be sticking around after gardening season this year. 😉🌲

Tell me what you think in the comments — even a simple YES, I’d be interested! will help me decide whether to make this happen.

SATURDAY
Good morning from Northern Edge! 🌿☀️

The coffee is strong, the truck is dirty, and there is almost certainly mulch somewhere it has absolutely no business being. 😂

August gardens are in that wonderfully wild stage — everything is full, buzzing, blooming, and occasionally trying to take over the neighbour’s property.

We’re soaking up these last beautiful weeks of summer and continuing to transform tired, overgrown spaces into gardens that feel intentional, manageable, and worth enjoying again.

Whatever your Saturday looks like, I hope you get outside for a little while today. 🌱

And if you happen to look at your garden while you’re out there and think, “Good Lord, what happened here?”…

You know who to call. 😉
