Hi Everyone, with the hurricane on its way I recommend turning all brands of mini splits off at the breaker before the winds start to pick up. Strong winds can push the fan motor on the outdoor units the wrong way or push them faster than the specifications allow. If this happens there are a few things that can happen to the outdoor unit. There may also be intermittent power outages which can cause a surge of electricity as power flickers back on randomly.
Wind
1: It can damage the motor and possibly the circuit board which will leave you without the use of the heat pump while you wait for a repair.
2: The system will go in to a fault code in which the usual practice is to turn off the breaker for approximately 30 mins to clear the fault.
3: In a very rare but possible scenario the heat pump may become detatched from it’s mounting which will put strain on the electrical supply and cause an electrical hazard if left energized.
Power Surges
1: As power comes back on to the system it can cause a surge which could damage any circuit boards the system has.

The results are in.
I installed a high efficiency Fujitsu 15000 BTU mini split in my home in Airport Heights on June 1st 2020 and have been monitoring the electrical usage of the unit using a Myeyedro electrical monitoring system. For the months starting in October 2020 through to the end of April 2021 (I have multiplied the 1 week of electrica usage so far this April x 4 to get an average amount) for a total of 2870kWh’s multiplied by the current electrical rates of $0.14c per kWh used for a grand total of $401 to heat my main floor with no baseboard heaters activated for the whole season.
