June is upon us, and to celebrate what is likely to be our last week being open here for Spring Sales (before we transition to Self Serve for our remaining flowers while we try madly to catch up in the field!), we are going to have a daily Door Crasher (although Jen would like to point out that we don’t really have doors to crash 🤪). We have some great ones planned for you, and after today I will be sure to post them the night before so you don’t miss them!

Today we are featuring our 11” terracotta hanging baskets, both flower and strawberry. They’re only $12, or 2/$20 (reg. $19.99).

Sweet Autumn Clematis. These photos are thanks to a customer (Heather), who sent them to me after I asked if could stop and take some last year, and then forgot to do so. I saw several people pulled over to admire them over the several weeks they bloomed in late summer and fall. Sweet Autumn Clematis grows BIG, fast, and is covered in sweet smelling flowers for several weeks in the fall. (Love it when a name tells you everything you need to know about the plant!). We have about 15 of these left, but they go quickly because anyone who knows the house keeps coming in and asking for “that vine that blooms at Heather’s.” 😀

I will always love lilacs, and always try to plant them near windows so that the incredible smell wafts through the open window. Right now the Bloomerang Lilac in our front garden is starting to bloom, and the two I have planted in a mixed hedgerow "for the birds and pollinators" (read: for me, but I needed to tell the HGF something so he'd help me dig the holes on a windy Wednesday in November about a decade ago) that are thinking about blooming. (Also, the lilacs just thinking about blooming now most definitely makes me think I'm not just imagining it and this spring was later). The Bloomerangs are a Korean type, and get their name from the fact that they "rebloom" (as in, the blooms come back around again - get it?) in late August/September. Whichever one you choose though, you can't go wrong!

Fun fact, told me me by an old farmer a long time ago: Lilacs were so common on old farms because when the outhouse hole was filled, they'd simply dig a new hole nearby and drag the building over it. Then they'd plant a lilac in the - ahem - nutrient rich soil on the old spot so they knew where the old hole was, and because the lilac had the added bonus of helping the area smell nice when it bloomed! So if you're ever in a place and find an old row or stand of lilacs, it could mark the spot of an old homestead. Aren't you glad you know that now?!

One of my happiest moments is when people come in and say they took our advice about growing a cutting garden. It doesn’t take a lot of plants. Even 24 plants planted close together will provide you with so much joy. Oh, and don’t forget to ask us about the difference pinching can make. ✂️.

I've been wanting to post about this for a while, but I have avoided it because the only way I've been able to think about starting it is "Size Matters". (I'm 12 inside). 😀.

Truly though, when it comes to a lot of plants, the SIZE of the POT matters! Case in point: These are our $12.99 banana plants. The large ones were planted in those large pots, and the poor small baby I left in the pot to see if it would grow any bigger. It did not, and I felt like a monster all season, when I saw how impressively these behemoths grew. Anyways, if you want a really impressive plant, may I recommend these Bananas?

We put together some of our best tips for great containers that last all season.

Hi friends and farm-ily,

Can we all agree that this spring has been.... well, that it hardly feels like it's even made an appearance this month, minus 36 hours where it was stupid hot last week? We know a lot of you are feeling the same, because we've been having these conversations on every sale day. Winter felt ENDLESS, spring has felt nonexistent and somehow it is the last week of May and the only things growing are the weeds, after all of that rain.

It's hard to get yourself in the mood for gardening, and with each passing day, we've been fighting the feeling that we're falling more and more behind -- Even though today is only the 24th of May and you are PATENTLY NOT FALLING BEHIND!!! (Whew! The Caps Lock is getting a workout today.)

However, we've talked to and heard from many of you that you just need some warmth and sunshine to be able to get started, and we feel that deeply. We've been looking after these plants for you for months for you, and we want them to be able to find nice homes with you! So Jen and I are going to split the field work/greenhouse work/manning the barn pad this week, and open every day until June 5th.

I *think* I have managed to update all of our various channels to share this new development, but I may have missed one (I have 14 things to change listed on a pad beside me, between social media, internet places and physical spaces, so the next time a local business misses something when they're making changes, you know why!) It would really help us get the word out if you'd like, share, or comment on this post, or tag a friend who needs to know they're just not behind in getting their gardens done.

Thank you!
- Heidi and team

Fire is roaring, coffee is hot, the snow is lightly falling, and I have just enough time before the waffle timer goes off to do an extremely quick update/round up.
-Greens are being collected and gathered in the workshop. The leaves sure held on to the dogwood for a long time this year! Winter Planters will be available at the Farm Store sometime mid/end week, so watch this space for updates. And yes, the HGF does use the manure spreader to bring home some of our greens, and yes, it’s awesome.
-Dogs are often muddy and were SO helpful with all of the cleanup. Not pictured, a Jen who was also very muddy at times, but is now enjoying much earned rest by the fireplace at her home.
-These simmer pots from The Hilltop Hive (my friend since childhood!) are in the Farm Store and I didn’t know they were missing from my life. I have one going now and it’s covering the vaguely muddy boot smell permeating the bottom floor.
-Eucalyptus is STILL amazing and STILL on 2/$30, as long as we can! (My goal is close to Christmas....)
-So much coffee.
-Garlic planted and all tucked in for winter!
-Farm Store still has beautiful squash, apples, carrots and other treats, plus eggs and more. It’s open 9-6 every day! 2674 County Road 42, Stayner.
-Waffles are done! Thank you for reading.
