Long before the prairies, before the Rockies rose, and long before Canada was Canada… plants were already hard at work cleaning the air.
This Fossil Friday, during Canada’s Environment Week, we’re giving a shout‑out to the original air‑purifiers: ancient plants.
🌊 It started in the oceans — early photosynthetic organisms (think cyanobacteria and algae) began releasing oxygen over 2.4 billion years ago.
🌿 Then came land plants — by the Devonian Period, early ferns, horsetails, and tree‑like plants spread across what is now Alberta, boosting oxygen levels even further.
🌬️ These ancient ecosystems helped shape the breathable atmosphere we rely on today.
So when we plant trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses here in Alberta, we’re continuing a hundreds‑of‑millions‑of‑years‑old tradition of cleaning the air and supporting life. This is especially important in our urban centres!
From fossil forests to modern yards — plants have always had our backs.
Happy Fossil Friday, and happy Environment Week, Alberta. 💚🍃
Let’s keep growing the future they started.

Frederick is taking a quick break from his supervisory duties this Feline Friday to show you in 5 easy steps to plant your new tree from Wheatland Trees🌳
Fred is using, as his model today, a beautiful, resilient 24mm Jade Bouquet Crabapple grown in an airpruning pot. These pots encourage the tree to grow multiple horizontal roots that do not bind as they would in a traditional pot. This helps it establish itself quickly once planted in its forever home.
If planting your own tree feels a bit overwhelming or if you are planting many trees for your home or landscaping project, we'll deliver your tree(s) and our expert planting crew is ready to start digging!
Remember to water 2-3x per week in the first season and enjoy your new tree from Wheatland Trees!
Frederick and the team are always here for more planting and tree care advice! Check our website wheatlandtrees.ca, give us a call 403-934-2829, or send us an email at [email protected]

We'll let the numbers speak for themselves! What's your best guess? Put it in the comments!
Here's some more important numbers: the carbon capture potential of a single mature spruce absorbs up to 22 kg of CO₂ per year. This full load can sequester 10,000–14,000 kg of CO₂ annually.

Tree watering tips from our planting crew: ☀️ Hot, windy prairie summers dry soil FAST. New roots are shallow — they need slow, deep, consistent watering.

💧Slow trickle hose (pencil‑thin stream): 20–40 min. per tree (Closer to 40 min in 28°C+) Week 1–2: Every 1–2 days, Week 3–12: 2–3× per week, then weekly. Add an extra watering during heatwaves.
💧Tree watering bags are one of the most effective tools for establishing new trees: Slow‑release watering over 5–9 hours is erfect for hydrophobic prairie soils and reduces evaporation in heat + wind. Waterbags deliver water exactly to the root zone and prevent over‑ and under‑watering. Fill every 2–3 days during hot weather.
Call, email, drop by, or check out wheatlandtrees.ca for your questions about keeping your new trees happy in the heat!
