The story behind Salvador Dalí’s “The Divine Comedy” (1960) series is one of persistence, controversy, and extraordinary craftsmanship.

Originally commissioned in 1950 to illustrate Dante’s iconic Italian poem, Dalí’s project was met with public backlash before it could be published. Rather than abandon the work, he completed all 100 watercolours independently, bringing his unmistakable Surrealist vision to Dante’s journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise.

Years later, the series was transformed into one of the most ambitious printmaking projects of the 20th century. More than 3,500 hand-carved woodblocks and nearly five years of engraving were required to faithfully reproduce the colours and detail of Dalí’s original paintings.

The result is The Divine Comedy (1960–1964): a remarkable fusion of literature, imagination, and craftsmanship that remains one of the defining achievements of Dalí’s printmaking legacy.

Designed by Gianfranco Frattini for Cassina in the mid-1960s, the Marema nesting tables are a standout example of Italian modernism. Featuring four low tables that stack into a sculptural drum-like form, then separate into graduated heights. Moulded in ABS plastic, the clean, structured form is gently softened by the buttery-beige finish. Whether nested together or arranged across a room, the tables make for a playful conversation starter and a prized piece for any collector’s mix.
