Join editor Catherine Osborne and BDP Quadrangle Principal Caroline Robbie to talk about how in Robbie’s own words ‘No crisis should be put to waste’. They will look at how the BDP Quadrangle team creatively, and with a sense of lightheartedness, reacted to their first return-to-work during the beginning of the pandemic (think pine cones on office chairs and community fridges that ‘take a vacation’.) And evolve the conversation into how they started from scratch to reimagine a collaborative workspace in a world that has been permanently changed.

This panel will focus on the value of parks and public spaces in the context of health and wellness. New York's iconic Central Park was built to ward off tuberculosis in the 1850s. Fast forward to the current pandemic in 2021: how are creative minds thinking about health and wellness in public spaces? This list of creative people and practices are redefining what public spaces, whether under a highway overpass, or reclaiming unused urban space, can look like. Now, more than ever we need insight into how we can safely re-emerge into beautiful and functional outdoor spaces.

Big, institutional hospitals tend to look and feel like big, institutional spaces. But there’s a lot more to healthcare design than meeting the terms of an RFP. How can designers imbue places of healing with a sense of warmth, tranquility and even wellness? And what stands in the way?

Moderated by Azure Magazine’s Senior Editor, Stefan Novakovic, this talk will explore the links between space and wellbeing, delving into how architects can help nurture comfort and intimacy in healthcare settings. The future of hospitals demands a new kind of design.

Panelists:

How will hospitals be designed in the future? And which valuable lessons has the pandemic provided to this matter? We have asked Danish architect at Arkitema, Wilhelm Berner-Nielsen, in particular, to answer these questions.

“Engineers, architects and city planners need to work together to create human, healing hospitals. We need to distance ourselves from the institutional and rigid hospital designs of the past. In the future, more and more consideration should be given to how hospital users perceive the feeling of space, light, view, interior design and materials. Transparent structures within the building will create a better feeling of space, overview and improve security. Other important elements would be circadian rhythm lighting, optimized acoustics and art as an integrated part of the wayfinding system. Also more single rooms with private bathrooms must be created for patients, relatives need better areas to live and sleep in and children need great play areas.” says Wilhelm Berner-Nielsen.

"Colour does not only add a pleasant quality to design—it reinforces it,” said French early-20th century painter and illustrator Pierre Bonnard; a claim that rings truer today more than ever with colour becoming an ever-more apparent element in the world of architecture and design.

Since the cones of our eyes have been able to decipher one colour from another, colours have been an integral part of our lives; even as our evolution as species, down to the point of survival where our eyes are better at recognizing colours such as red and yellow (think traffic lights) than those green and blue. However, our perception of colour is also highly subjective all the way down to our cultural and social identity as individual beings. Thus, when talking the topic of colour in the spheres of architecture and design, it’s important to emphasize that there is no right or wrong colour. Instead, it can be argued to be about considering the spatial context of a given setting when selecting the colours.

The pandemic in 2020 changed a lot. Really a lot. You could talk about digitalisation or remote working etc, but one thing is clear: the pandemic of 2020 will most likely not be the last one. After SARS, Ebola, and swine flu we can conclude that pandemics are most likely here to stay. BBC reported on this during the fall, and Professor Eric Fevre from the University of Liverpool says, "this kind of event is likely to happen again and again. It's been happening all throughout our interaction with the natural world. What's important now is how we understand it and respond to it.”
