Baird Sampson Neuert Architects is proud to announce Passive Laneway Housing Prototypes were nationally recognized with a 2021 Green Building Award from Sustainable Architecture & Building Magazine (SABMag [Sustainable Architecture and Building Magazine])

The vanguard of up to 50 laneway and infill housing planned for a historic neighbourhood adjacent to the University of Toronto downtown campus, these three prototypes demonstrate the concept of Passive House + Pre-Fabrication + Net Zero Energy. Confirming high performance / low impact construction can be less complicated and delivered without a cost premium over traditional construction, the prototypes improve sustainability and affordability – making compact laneway living more accessible.

A special thanks to our design partners Local Impact, MTE Consultants, Runge & Associates Inc., Index Construction, and the Client University of Toronto.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is with great sadness I must share the news of Barry’s passing. The suddenness came as a surprise to his family and the office. He had been successfully battling cancer for a number of years but was recently diagnosed with a new strain which rapidly overtook him this weekend. Words cannot express the loss, which has been rendered surreal by the pandemic. Thank you for the calls and heartfelt notes of support that have already begun rolling in ahead of this announcement.

When his health situation became apparent a few weeks back he sent a note to members of the office requesting we not feel sorry for him - but rather channel our energy and passion into our work. His request is a true example of his mentorship and unwavering quest for excellence even as his body was failing him.

Barry was a leading figure in everything he did - influencing generations of architects. He was first my teacher and guide – remaining my personal standard and inspiration - leading and teaching by example with integrity, passion, and curiosity. It is fitting that the two projects that Barry led, the 1995 NPC Butterfly Conservatory and the recently completed McEwan Graduate Study and Research Building at York University were both nationally recognized in 2020. These projects represent a trajectory of research, experimentation, and innovation which was initially prototyped for a fringe project and ultimately developed and integrated back into the mainstream.

It has truly been a great honour to collaborate and share many years with him in the studio, as an intern, project architect, and later as a collaborator and partner. He has left us far too soon and will be greatly missed. We will carry forward his passion and torch for holistic, synthetic design, and continue to advance solutions to the defining challenges of our age.

Messages of condolence can be shared on BSN architects’ website or social media pages (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter). Details will be forthcoming regarding a planned Celebration of Life with the Daniels Faculty, as well as opportunities to direct donations to the Barry W. Sampson Scholarship Fund that was set up at the time of Barry’s all to recent retirement from The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

Introducing the future of - ‘Prototype Laneway Housing’ designed by Baird Sampson Neuert Architects for University of Toronto.

These three prototypes homes are the first of over 50 laneway and infill houses proposed within the historic Huron Sussex district neighborhood. The homes realize deep environmental and cost-saving measures alongside major social and community benefits related to the intensification of land use - without transforming the size, scale, and character of the neighbourhood.

Designed to be net-zero energy and net-zero carbon using ‘Passive House’ principles, they utilize super-insulated prefabricated wall panel, window, and foundation insulation systems, with on-site renewable energy generation using rooftop photovoltaics. An earth tube system preconditions and moderates the temperature of ventilation air which is delivered to a high-efficiency heat recovery system. No VOC paints and finishes were utilized throughout to maximize indoor air quality. In addition to improving the overall sustainability and energy efficiency of the houses, the prefabrication approach results in major reductions to on-site construction waste and landfill, as the majority of construction materials are pre-manufactured to required dimensions.
