Last week was thrilled to co-host the first-ever Canadian Meet Up with our friends at Urban Land Advisors Inc. Attendees braved the cold and snow for a night of drinks, food, and good conversation around the future of post-secondary campuses.

Our principals, Anne McIlroy and Khatereh Baharikhoob, shared the importance of staying connected in this time of uncertainty to support each other, share tools, lessons, and resources.

We are so thrilled to be part of bringing SCUP’s well-established wealth of expertise to new audiences and already have plans for more events in the future... stay tuned!

We are proud to announce our Indigenous landscape project Ziibiing has won an Award of Merit from the AIA Canada Society in the Community-Engaged category.

As the weather warms, you can visit this project just outside Hart House on campus and see how the input from Elders, faculty, staff, and students were translated into design direction and built form.

On February 5th, the City of Toronto adopted a zoning bylaw amendment for an 11-storey, 200 bed addition to Belmont House, a not-for-profit provider of long-term care and senior care. As the planning consultant for the project, the Brook McIlroy team—along with architect and project manager —is proud to be part of the organization’s efforts in meeting the rising need for long-term care in the province. With over 40,000 people on waiting lists across Ontario, this project is a necessary part of the solution and we are excited to see it move forward.

We are proud to announce that we have partnered with to update its Campus Plan. The Plan serves as a roadmap for the University’s built environment. A guide for the replacement of aging infrastructure and the adaptation of existing space, this plan will ensure the work is done resourcefully and meets the changing needs of students and the greater campus community.

Of particular note, the inclusion of The Indigenous Design Studio—who have recently completed the Indigenous Gathering Space on BMH Green, Long House Labs, and the Indigenous Relations office suite on campus—represents a continuing relationship with the University in a mission to foster connection, cultural awareness, and learning.

“Brook McIlroy is committed to supporting the University of Waterloo on this essential initiative. Our extensive work with post-secondary institutions across Canada has demonstrated the value of thoughtful and strategic campus planning. By prioritizing sustainability, accessibility, and cultural inclusivity, we are committed to addressing UWaterloo’s critical needs while creating a campus that reflects the University’s values and its long-term vision.”

We are honoured the Saugeen First Nation GZHE-MNIDOO GI-TA-GAAN (Creator’s Garden and Ampitheatre) Master Plan has been selected as one of the recipients for the Vision Award: Planning Process for OPPI’s PlanON Awards!

The Master Plan was prepared by Brook McIlroy’s Indigenous Design Studio in association with medicine plant educator Joseph Pitiwanakwat & Elder Duke Redbird guided by a series of community workshops & feasts held at the site. The Saugeen Amphitheatre has been an important destination for visitors to the Bruce-Grey area since it was built in the 1970s by the community. A strategy to revitalize the site is guided by a Master Plan that expands its role as a cultural centre based on Anishinaabek world views of land stewardship; sustainability; & the reclamation of Indigenous language & traditional knowledge. The Gardens, designed around a thematic interpretation of the 7 Grandfather Teachings, provides an inspiring setting for cultural reclamation.

The Master Plan represents an important step in cultural and economic revitalization for the community. The project will assist in positioning Saugeen First Nation as a destination for visitors for concerts, theatre, conferences, and cultural celebration.

The Master Plan has been previously recognized at other national-level awards. This includes the 2021 Healthy Communities Planning Award from CIP; the 2021 Planning and Analysis Award of Excellence from CSLA; and the 2022 National Urban Design Award – Urban Design Plans from RAIC.

The award will be presented at OPPI’s conference in Ottawa on September 20, 2023.

June is National Indigenous History Month and we're celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. While not shying away from the harsh realities of discrimination and cruelties they've faced. We invite you to join us in this moment of reflection, learning, and respect for Indigenous communities. Every story matters, every voice counts. Read our article to learn what we are doing and how you can participate. https://brookmcilroy.com/2023/06/21/national-indigenous-history-month/

What a memorable day it was at the announcement and sod-turning ceremony for the Kenhtè:ke Language and Cultural Centre, a building dedicated to Mohawk language revitalization.

From our studio, Intern Architect Danny Roy and Interior Designer Kathryn Lawrence were present for the announcement and hosted an Open House after the event.

Community members were shown the latest drawings and renderings and we were overwhelmed by their warm reception and excitement about the design.

The announcement included guests The Honourable Marc Miller, MP, Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations Canada; Callie Hill, Executive Director of TTO; Elected Chief R. Donald Maracle; and an esteemed Elder of the community. Their speeches gave voice to the pride and anticipation shared by all present.

Special thanks to APTN and Quinte News who were there to capture the special moment. Stay tuned as we bring more updates on this monumental project meant to celebrate and preserve Mohawk teachings and practices.
