The library protrudes like a glass pavilion into the landscape. Rhythmic window bays continue the precise order of the Dickinson building. A grey granite “slice” into the landscape and a river-rock “reflecting pool” help to fade the building into its surroundings.

The highlight of the largely open-concept plan is a double-height reading atrium and general collections space with various seating types for solo and group learning, framed by mirrored cladding that dissolves the transition between the original building and the addition.

Extensive use of transparent and reflective materials such as mirrors and glass maximize natural light and dematerialize the language of the new addition, allowing the existing architecture to be perceived in a clear and respectful manner.

Inside the library addition, transparency, sightlines, views and clean materials inspire a calm space. Iconic furniture pieces including Pierre Paulin’s Tulip Chairs, Pierro Lissoni’s Extra Wall Sectionals, and TKTK Recliners uphold the quality of the space and support its relationship to the original modernist building.

Hired to expand the existing library, we designed a protruding glass box with rhythmic vertical window bays and horizontal alignments that respect the original window pattern used by Dickinson. The result creates a thoughtful dialogue between old and new structures.

Centennial College’s Story Arts Campus Library occupies a restored 1954 building designed by renowned Toronto Modernist, Peter Dickinson. This small project is seen as an independent building element that provides the existing campus and the neighbouring community with an example of how architecture might evolve to incorporate highly sustainable systems in a beautiful, rhythmic, and expressive manner.
