A little behind-the-scenes look at what we've been working on at Selkirk Security Services Ltd.

We've recently completed two major improvements to our facility - our new Secure Document Destruction Room and a complete renovation of our Fire Extinguisher Service Room.

Our Secure Document Destruction Room has been purpose-built to support our newest service: secure, controlled destruction of confidential documents. From the moment documents are received until their final destruction, they remain within a controlled and restricted area of our facility.

We've also completely renovated our Fire Extinguisher Service Room, giving our technicians a clean, organized and dedicated workspace for servicing and maintaining the fire protection equipment our customers rely on.

For us, these improvements are about more than renovating a couple of rooms. They're part of our continued investment in local people, local infrastructure and services that businesses and residents throughout the Kootenays can rely on.

From security and video surveillance to fire protection, monitoring and now secure document destruction, we're proud to continue expanding what we can provide right here at home.

Our Thoughts Are With Those Affected by the Wildfires Across British Columbia

As our province faces a State of Emergency due to the growing number of wildfires burning throughout British Columbia, all of us at Selkirk Security would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to everyone affected.

To the families who have been evacuated or are facing uncertainty, to those who have lost homes, property or livelihoods, and to the communities watching these fires closely, please know that you are in our thoughts.

We also want to recognize the firefighters, emergency responders, volunteers and countless others who are working tirelessly to protect lives, homes and communities throughout our province. Your dedication and service during these difficult times are deeply appreciated.

For those wishing to help, the Canadian Red Cross has established the 2026 British Columbia Wildfires Appeal to support people and communities affected by the fires. We encourage anyone considering making a donation to use recognized and verified organizations so that your generosity reaches those who need it.

We’ve been getting calls and messages lately from local businesses and apartment/condo buildings about phone solicitations saying their fire alarm communicator needs to be upgraded or switched to stay compliant.

Let’s clear that up.

A lot of these calls are coming from sales teams working off scripts, not from licensed fire alarm or security professionals, or qualified security consultants who actually know your building, your system, or local requirements.

ULC fire alarm monitoring in Canada is a certified and regulated service. It’s not just swapping out a communicator—it involves the right equipment, proper installation standards, signal transmission requirements, and certification through a ULC-listed monitoring provider.

Before making any changes, take a minute to:

✔ Check with your insurance provider
✔ Confirm with your local fire authority
✔ Speak with a qualified fire alarm or security professional, or security consultant

The reality is—not every system needs to be changed, and not every offer out there provides the same level of compliance or protection… especially when things like certification aren’t clearly explained.

And yes—a low monthly price might sound good—but when it comes to life safety, you want to know exactly what you’re getting.

At Selkirk Security, we don’t treat this like a sales pitch. This is life safety, and it carries real responsibility.

👉 If it’s about life safety, make sure you’re getting facts—not a sales script.

If you’ve received one of these calls and want a straight answer, give us a call. We’re always happy to take a look and point you in the right direction.

A quick reminder for property owners: Not all security advice comes from a security professional.

———

With the growing number of security systems being sold online, through telemarketing, door-to-door campaigns, and large national companies, many property owners are being approached by sales representatives rather than qualified security consultants.

In British Columbia, individuals selling alarm systems should hold a Security Worker Licence for alarm sales, which allows them to promote and sell security systems. However, this is different from the experience and training involved in Professional Security Consulting, where systems are designed based on a deeper assessment of a building’s risks and vulnerabilities.

The equipment itself is often quite capable. The real difference is who is evaluating your property and recommending the system.

Before agreeing to any security sales visit or installation, it is always wise to ask a few questions:

✔ Ask to see the person’s BC Government issued Security Worker Licence.
✔ Make sure you understand their role and qualifications.
✔ Review any monitoring agreement carefully, especially if it involves a long-term contract.
✔ Confirm whether you are purchasing the equipment or leasing it as part of the monitoring agreement.

At Selkirk Security Services, our system recommendations are reviewed by our own Licensed Security Consultant, ensuring security planning is based on professional assessment rather than sales alone.
