The public engagement process identified these trees as critical components of the square leading to their designation as “character-defining elements”, as a per guidelines. Integrating these huge trees into the redesign was a significant challenge given the 1.2m change from original grade. Throughout construction trees were monitored and cared for, starting with the mapping their root system with ground penetrating radar. The new paving is supported by trays with a permeable grout #( ) insures air and water reach the roots. Finally stainless steel stages and benches will be built to protect the root flares. So nice (more than a relief) to see these old trees emerge healthy after 18 months of construction.

The rehabilitation of Blood Alley Square would not have been possible without the help of a wide range of consultants, including civil engineers, arborists, planners and landscape architects. A crucial first principa, given Gastown’s designation as a was to understand the history of this space. As our heritage consultant, John Atkin explains, the quirky history of the space is often misunderstood. In this video, John try to separate fact from fiction. No gallows, no jails, no riots …but lots and lots of urban planning. Thanks John.

A student shares their thoughts on how to make Blood Alley Square a more inclusive place for all residents. Removing vehicle parking from the square and providing a range of accessible ramps to navigate the grade between the Square and adjacent buildings was an important objective of the redesign of the space.

Speaking to local residents, businesses and stakeholders was an important part of our public consultation process. Here a Local Business Owner's Thoughts on how to make Blood Alley Square a place everyone can enjoy. The plaza was formerly used as storage for more than a dozen waste bins, which have now been removed from the square. The city of Vancouver will partner with local community groups to ensure that waste is removed form the square on a daily basis.

As the rehabilitation of Blood Alley Square in historic Gastown nears completion, our gratitude goes out to the many people who shared their thoughts on how to improve the square. Since 2016 we heard many perspectives. At meetings, workshops and open houses and special events in the square, we listened. A special thank you goes out to our engagement team and all the interested citizens, neighbours, city staff and community groups who shared their time and input. More updates to come.
