This project was another fun one! One that I would encourage anyone who is somewhat handy and wants to get their hands dirty and learn some stuff that would normally be out of their comfort zone. Many of these 1940’s Vancouver homes have really small dark dining rooms that seat 6 people at most. John , who I had done several smaller jobs before, asked me if this was possible. After checking to see if it was in any way structural (which it wasn’t), we developed a plan of attack where he and his son could participate in the process. They undertook the demolition of the wall and building the new framing as well as decide upon the curve of the arch. After that I took over the finishing of the drywall and compound sculpting. The finish on the walls were done to match the old look of the lathe and plaster look. The baseboards were reused to also keep the same worn look. John fortunately kept some of the old flooring which was used to replace the missing boards. We had just enough to run the length. Almost a perfect match right down the the level of sheen on the floor.

The transformation in this place was amazing! I always loved redoing old floors. There are so many steps involved when you do it right. Many of them were on my knees with microfiber towels. (about 10 times wiping down the entire floor between steps)

I don’t post as many jobs as I should, but this was a fun and challenging one. Before and after pictures and the nightmare job the plumbers did previously in the basement below the bathtub. I presume the fiberglass was to absorb the leak that they didn’t quite fix and white duct tape to make it look like the fire retardant spray on the rest of the ceiling. Happy it’s like new now!

🌿 From Centuries-Old Olive Grove to New Life 🌿

I’ve built so many things over the years—always starting with a design in hand. You knew what it was supposed to be, gathered the materials, and worked step by step until the vision took shape.

This craft is different. Now I begin with nothing more than a raw piece of wood. No plans, no blueprint. The wood itself decides where it wants to go, and I just follow along. That’s what makes it exciting—every board turns into something unique, and I never fully know what the outcome will be until it’s finished.

This particular piece is something special: olive wood from a centuries-old olive grove. The original tree had to be replaced with a younger one, but instead of being lost, the wood lives on through woodworking. I often find myself wondering how many people over the generations enjoyed meals cooked with its oils, and now it’s finding new life in a different form.

📸 The first two photos show the raw wood as I received it.
📸 The third photo shows it divided into four sections, each with its own future:
• Top – a serving tray
• Middle left – a Glencairn flight tray
• Middle right – rectangular coasters
• Bottom – four hand-made cheese knives

📸 The last two photos show the serving tray beginning to take shape. It’s still in progress, but that’s the beauty of this craft—the transformation is ongoing, and the final story hasn’t been told yet.

If anyone would like to see some of the woods I have available, or inquire about a custom piece, feel free to reach out.

I had some fantastic clients who inspired me to work again with some beautiful wood again. I built some black walnut shelves, fireplace mantle and a bookshelf. Thank you so much Jeff and Devony! I couldn't help myself but get a bunch of great pieces of live edge black walnut and spalted ash. (Spalted is the black line you see in the photo) Spalted grain is a tree fungus embeded in the wood. You can find spalted walnut, but it doesnt come often in the ash variety. I will be doing a lot of these charcuterie boards, cutting board as well as flight trays for beer tasting, whiskey and another with shot glasses. If anyone wants one I would be more than happy to do that. I will be adding antique handles as well as rubber feet for table slippage. I know I hate when my boards slide around. 😁

These were the final jobs for a main floor Reno. Custom walnut shelves, mantle and book shelf. I love working with beautiful wood. That combined with creative ideas like installing a light underneath the bottom shelf with the low volrage wire running through the inside of the wood totally unseen. Also like how the supports are also hidden. Each of the shelves were made of two planks being glued, and doweled to connect. Boiled linseed makes the grains come out beautifully.

Totally water proof under stair storage. Great easy way to make extra storage for bikes, garbage containers or BBQ.

My favorite project so far! Brought the entire backyard to the dirt. Concrete retaining wall and partial concrete pad where reclaimed lumber from a prison was used for the irrigation system to run under to the various planters and beds. Reclaimed lumber from a 1910’s factory for the pergola/gazebo. The back of the gazebo will be a living roof with plants and an additional irrigation system. Granite stone reclaimed from Gastown Blood Alley for the planters surrounding the space. Not only was this an amazing project, the owners were also amazing to work for/with. They came up with a lot of creative ideas that I will use in my future projects!
Thank you Stephen, Shelbey and their lovely daughters!
