Capilano University – Fulmer Family Centre for Childhood Studies
MOSO® Bamboo Outdoor | North Vancouver, BC
Nestled within the rainforest setting of North Vancouver, the Fulmer Family Centre for Childhood Studies at Capilano University was designed to foster a deep connection between learning, nature, and community.
For the outdoor playground and landscape areas, PFS Studio specified MOSO® Bamboo decking as part of a broader vision to integrate natural, sustainable materials that harmonize with the surrounding forest environment and reflect the ecological values of the campus.
Unlike composite decking products that may contribute to micro-plastic pollution over time, MOSO Bamboo offered a natural, bio-based alternative aligned with the region’s environmental priorities and the university’s commitment to sustainability and wellness.
Beyond aesthetics, performance was a key consideration. MOSO Bamboo achieves Class A Fire Resistance and has been tested to CAN/ULC S-102, allowing the project team to incorporate a natural material solution while meeting demanding fire safety requirements.
The material’s exceptional durability, dimensional stability, and low maintenance characteristics also made it ideal for a high-use educational environment exposed to the Pacific Northwest climate. MOSO Bamboo naturally weathers beautifully over time without requiring oiling, while maintaining its structural integrity and refined appearance.
The project further embraced circular and regenerative thinking by incorporating trees removed from the site into natural playground elements—reinforcing the connection between children, materiality, and the surrounding ecosystem.
This project demonstrates how architecture and landscape design can move beyond conventional material systems toward bio-based solutions that are resilient, beautiful, and deeply connected to place.
