lifting a dahlias with a border fork (my favourite tool for this job) - give the plant a wide berth and loosen the soil all around it, gently prying it up, trying not to break or stab any tubers.
best to divide them every 3 years or so to prevent lots of skinny, weak growth. one fresh tuber will produce a few stout, strong stems in a single season, which in turn will provide you with plenty of flowers for cutting.
this big clump will be divided into 5-10 viable tubers. one or two will be replanted and the rest shared with friends.

picked up some goodies fall sale today - these are going to beef up a planting project located at harling point - perhaps the windiest, most exposed, salt-spray laden spot in victoria! the original planting last fall included quite a few new-to-me plants from stellata that i wanted to try out and they are thriving in this hot, sunny, windy situation. we had a few plants fail, most notably heather. which i often see thriving close to the ocean, but they have not liked it here. probably too much salt spray. also purple sage, which surprised me because i’ve had good results with bergartten sage in this spot. so the sad guys are going to be replaced with more of the happy ones.
