Tour Canada’s very first Passive House student residence!

On June 4th, join ZEBx, Passive House Canada and UBCO’s Facilities team for a tour of UBCO’s Passive House-certified Skeena Residence.

Have you ever wondered what a high-performance residential building is like to operate or live in? When UBC decided to drop Canada’s first all-electric Passive House student residence onto its Okanagan campus, it had big dreams. It was a ground-breaking development that put UBC on the map as an educational institution that walks the sustainability talk. The building is fully loaded with all kinds of energy-efficient and low-carbon features, ranging from high-performance windows, highly insulated walls, and a shockingly airtight building envelope to centralized electric heat pumps for both space conditioning and domestic hot water.

So, what happened after the building was handed over to UBCO’s facilities team? Did they suffer the consequences of grand ambitions? What’s it like for students to live in this landmark in Kelowna’s green building landscape? What is the real-world energy consumption of this ultra-energy-efficient building?
