What is this? The new growth is up now, it's very soft and pliable, little tuber-like fleshy roots. Purple blush at bottom of plant. Unsheathed. Apparently doesn't flower. Looks kinda like a floppy Japanese iris in summer. Any ideas? suggested Satinflower but those are sheathed at the base...unless there are other kinds?

The Revenge berry - aka snow berry, is quite toxic. Fortunately it's also hard to mistake. These clusters were the prettiest and juiciest I saw this year!
There are commercial cultivars available that make pink berries. Beware the shrubs suckering habit; this native can spread underground in a most invasive manner!

Cornus mas, the cornelian cherry, tastes like bit like a cross between tomato and cherry. I have a single cultivar in my garden, which is probably why I never get much fruit (they like a pollination buddy). Aside from the funky berries, it's a great super early spring flowering feature.

What's that shrub? Pomegranate, believe it or not. If you are interested in growing it here, don't expect easy fruit - these babies need a sheltered spot with reflective heat (against a south facing wall) and/or possibly Christmas lights in rougher winters. Bob Duncan from Fruit Trees and More apparently grows them so I'd look him up. There are also simply decorative cultivars that are more about the flowers than the fruit.

I like to call out public plantings because those are my tax dollars at work! These are: New plantings and rain gardens at Saanich Neighbourhood Place.

The garden is not technically a purely native garden, though it does have some indigenous species such as flowering currant and tall Mahonia. The pink Potentillas are a great pick to insert some later season colour! Good job, Saanich. This should be as low maintenance as a garden can get - those sedges will make a mean groundcover and are most likely an evergreen type, so you'd just have to eventually prune back some of the shrubs if they encroach on walkways.

What kind of sedge is that? Anyone? Is it the kind that grows wild in the river or an ornamental? 🤔

Guess that shrub?
My Oleander, which has looooved this warm spring and hot summer, looking as good as many a buddy in an Austrian or Italian garden...I overwintered it by wheeling the pot I to my garage which has some north facing natural light. It grew a bit over the winter, and I put it out a little too early - you really gotta make sure there won't be any frost at all otherwise the cold shock is too much for the soft new winter growth. The result was that a bunch of the newest leaves turned frost bitten purple and then eventually dropped. Shrub itself was fine, as it's hardy to about -5 Celsius.

Zyklamen with borrowed foliage : the dormant corms have shot up late summer blooms (these kind flower and leaf separately) through this carpet of Oxalis oregana. Both make great dwellers for dry shade groundcover.

Guess that squash?: Last year I took seed from a delicata, and neglected to look up the cross pollination habits of curcubits. Turns out they totally cross pollinate with zuchini! This seedling turned into a super vigorous mega productive sprawling monster and produced 12 of these mini pumpkin looking things. Fingers crossed they'll taste any good! If not, they'll make really cute fall/ Halloween decor.

If you like zuchini and patty pan squash, you'll love yellow crookneck. I have 2 plants this year and am completely inundated with baby squash with a deliciously mild nutty flavour. Both plants have multiple branches instead of the one I am used to from zuchini. So prolific! Oh and then there are the beans. Don't even get me started on those! Ok well if you read this far: They are called "French Filet pole beans" and they make mega long beans! Like your regular green beans but, often over 12 inches long! That means super quick harvesting and less time prepping to cook. The one drawback to bush beans: they mature slightly later. Next year I'd do an early patch of bush, followed by just 3 or 4 of these pole ones. Amazing yield! I've given away so many, fed tons my extended family when they visited...

Having a hard time picturing a change in your garden? What would it feel like to have privacy screening or to soften a wall with a vine? Here are some examples of how I illustrate options I discuss with clients: a free standing lattice panel to block view of a living room window.... A mid size multistem shrub to break up the expanse of brick wall.... A potted vine and wall mounted lattice in the back courtyard... A small tree flanked by shrubs to turn a view of an ugly fence and a garage roof into a wall of greenery.

Looking for an evergreen vine with scented flowers? Star or confederate Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) can fit the bill. Best in partial to full sun, it even grows in containers. (How is yours doing, ?) Seen here outside ! Speaking of which, those ice cream sandwiches and bars are sooooo good. Go if you haven't been. One of the only ice cream that doesn't make me feel gross - like, I feel more like I've had a nutritious snack after one of those bars. Which I recommend sharing - they are pretty sizable. Oops I actually meant to write about this plant.... But, the ice cream! 😛😛😛
