PLAYING WITH SQUARES

Side by side Duplex renovation from a few years ago.

As I've been doing years of planning since 2020, with fairly little actually materializing (and those that materialized were ne er photographed, which, yes, is on me), I thought I go and dig out some project photos that actually came into fruition.

😀

There is a neighboring house very close by and privacy is an issue, therefore I introduced a high band of glazing, which playfully breaks up into square clerestory windows with a nod to the adjacent existing windows and ceiling design in the living area.

The clients weren't concerned about storage and gave me the heads up to introduce open and asymmetrical display areas.

I'm also quite font of the large scale 3D wave effect along the stairwell wall. We opened up the roof and installed 3 elongated skylights for natural light to flow down into the kitchen, and opened up the wall between kitchen and lower stairs to the basement.

The climatized wineroom was a bit of a technical feat- that is where teamwork with skilled and imaginative trades pays off.

NEW YEAR, NEW PROJECT

In the works right now.

What a great way to start off the New Year.

This is the BEFORE!!

You might see nothing wrong with this kitchen. And I might say you are (almost) right.
However, it's glossy grey aesthetic just did not vibe with the clients, who plan to make this lovely bungalow-style residence their forever home.

It's actually a new-to-me step to take apart a kitchen that is in pretty excellent shape, and replace all the fronts, the gables, kicks, and crown details and replace them with a doorstyle that has a minimalist frame detail.

The grey gloss product won't do well being just painted, and the featureless slab doors just don't quite give me the dimension I'd like to add to the home.

The island had some quirks none of us could understand, and after a few possible design options we decided on a more streamlined U- shape work counter and a single strip of a raised bar with additional storage under.
This means the cabinetmaker only needs to adjust one cabinet on one side to achieve equal length on both short sides of the 'U', and build 3 more boxes for the bar storage.

We will also streamline the lighting design. I find it very important to create regular ceiling grids to keep the eye from wandering around the ceiling while trying to figure out an underlying pattern.
I'm sure you heard that as humans, we are always subconsciously looking for patterns - and the ceiling is certainly not the area where I want the eye to rest on - unless it's a really striking ceiling design. 😀

There is much more to the overall of this home, and I can't wait to share a bit more of the progress.
Lots of custom millwork, some new, stylish, comfy furniture, and a very elegant, masculine space.

JOBSITE VISIT TODAY

The 16 ft long 3- tiered fountain is coming along nicely!
Made from a concrete base and troughs made from black Corian. I'm thrilled how crisp those details come out!

Kitchen Party...

Small spaces require an extra level of attention to details.

We were 5 of us in this kitchen at one point yesterday during countertop templating!
